Enjoy the trip to San Francisco. A wonderful city - home to some of the best folks I've ever met in my time travelling and playing golf. Do try to see Cal Club - the course is wonderful, as are several others in SF

One could write pages of recommendations about things to do in San Fran, and I agree with many that have been mentioned.  With respect to golf, if you're able to play during the week (and maybe even if not), a call or letter from your professional, or perhaps from you, could probably work at Cal Club or Olympic.  IMHO, both are great experiences, even if very different.  Completely agree about the Marin Headlands; you might also consider jumping on a ferry and heading toward Marin County--perhaps from the Ferry Building (which is cool as well, and has terrific food).  And on the food front, there are too many great places to mention, but if you like Greek, I have gone here--http://www.kokkari.com/home/--several times and loved it.

Josh: our family did this trip a few years ago.  My $0.02:

1. thedouble deck bus was so worth the cost.  The guide was great and we got an overview of the City.
2. Alcatraz - YES YES YES...even tne 12 year old loved it.
3. Drive across the Golden Gate...we did and spent the afternoon is Sausilito....lovely.
4. We had the 12 year old or WW (wonderful wife) & I would have wandered thru Haight Ashbury....
5. Cable car ride...touristy but so worht waiting in line.
6. We had dim sum (brunch) in Chinatown...really good and as good as Chinatown in NYC.
7. Winery - Try Lambert Bridge in Healdsburg.....www.lambertbridge.com  
8. WW & the 12 y/o loved the Ghiradelli chocolate crepes they would have nihtly on Pier 39. Hoipefully the crepe shop is still there.

Nothing wrong with the Haight these days that a purging of national chains (The Gap, etc) wouldn't cure.  Still lots of funky shops including one with great baseball memorabilia.   No dangerous or druggy vibe that I was aware of in August 2012.  "Heavens above, he's on a street called love..."

Wholeheartedly seconded. One of the best meals I've ever eaten.

Plus: breakfast at the People's Cafe (1419 Haight St., between Masonic Ave. & Ashbury St.). Really good food, and a classic SF atmosphere.

And Alcatraz, for sure, if it's open. Looking at that gorgeous city across the bay, with a chill wind howling, you can almost *feel* how bereft the prisoners there must have been -- so close, and yet so incredibly far!
