Great stuff Marc.

Not exactly the wide open treeless place many would have you believe ANGC was in 1947 ;)

Thanks for posting, Marc. What's interesting to me is his low ball flight on shots to 13 green, the idea that that was the preferred trajectory. What does that say about conditioning then vs now?

I've got a set of Hogan Apex's from the late 80's...and trying to hit them now vs. my current set...and imagining the clubs from the 1940's/50's, I don't know that he had any other choice but to play that trajectory with his unusually (for the time) flat swing.

Joe,

His left arm and acceleration thru the ball are impressive.

His weight shift and lower body action contribute plenty of power. That is fun to watch!

Was his stance really as wide as those first shots make it look?

Johnny Miller took a look and he reckons it looks like Hogan's catching it a groove low.

What seems significantly different from today's swings is all of the body movement.

Today's players seem far more stable, as if they're anchored better

Interesting to observe the somewhat shaggier rough, the non-manicured creek, and how quickly the seemingly low trajectory fairway wood shot hit over the creek stops after landing. No white cap on BH's head either.
All the best

Comes back to the stimp mentioned in another thread. It sure doesn't look very fast.....

It's got nothing to do with the "Stimp", it's the Bermuda grass

I've looked at lots of Hogan footage over the years, but I had not seen that material before. Very fun to see him pre bus accident. The rotation in his swing is just amazing. It makes me laugh at all the x factor garbage that we get fed today.
ANGC as the good Doctor intended it to be.

What amazes me is that virtually every picture and every video from every course that is more than 50 years old shows the course in a very raw state. Hazards had a raw and wild look to them - almost as if only fairways and greens were maintained. These pictures and videos make me yearn to play those courses. Today's courses are too perfectly manicured.

If you look at the old B&W photos from the  1930s,  40s, and through the 1950s in many different books,  you would see from the old photos that ANGC was manicured during those periods.

Cannot explain the creek in the video,   but old photos showed the creek banks were maintained.

The old B&W photos from 30s through 50s,  show much fewer trees as compared to the the 90s.

Stan Byrdy's book and Frank Christian's book are good references.

I still love the post accuident swing the most, when everything looked a littlemore polished, less run off at the top of the swing and everything more synched up.
But this is indeed great footage...love it
Oh  and the golf course was good to see as well!

I think Hogan said in an interview (that is available on youtube) that he played his best golf in 1946-49 before the accident but after he had found his secret to hitting the fade. Sorry for being anoraky but it is here at about 4:50. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic_84wijVWs

Certainly at this time he was pretty much unbeatable. But I know what you mean, it definitely looked more controlled in the later years.

It appears he hits a draw into a right pin on 13.  Interesting choice.
