2021 Walker Cup Venue?
« on: September 08, 2013, 05:41:12 PM »
Where do you think it will be held? Where would you to see it played?

My guess: The Country Club

Friar's Head

Now that would be awesome.

Here's an under the radar pick, Canterbury.

This is actually the most legitimate "What is your ideal course to host X championship/tournament."  Based on the recent, and future Walker Cup courses, ANY great course is possible.

1st, how about Dornoch for the UK.

For the US, how about Sand Hills - or is Sand Hills too remote even for the Walker Cup?  I gotta believe Bandon will get a Walker Cup within the next 16 years.  Even Peachtree has held a Walker Cup.  Is San Francisco GC possible?  Is Crystal Downs too short?

Milwaukee CC would be special - some great risk/reward holes.

Bill,

How many Walker Cup's have been held in remote locations far removed from a major city ?

I think you can forget Sand Hills and Bandon as it would be difficult to attract sponsors, let alone spectators

I have a hard time believing decisions are made based on sponsors for the walker cup. Logistics is indeed a concern, including tournament ops, player, family, support staff, etc.  Maybe that changes in the coming years with the newly minted Fox deal and the increased air time it will get but will never draw a ton of sponsorship dollars.

Maybe Geoff can broker another deal....maybe at another revered California course...a Mackenzie with a few good par 3s near the ocean?

The Walker Cup is the most sought after tournament of all the USGA events, all the top clubs want it.  All the prestige and none of the hassle for the host club.  So it all depends who is on the good side of the USGA inner circle.  Bandon Dunes might get there eventually.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it at Seminole one day, too.

Yeamans Hall.  Edit: Hosted a successful Women's Am this year and seeimingly has a good relationship with the USGA.

Might not be 2021, but I'd like to see (and would think the USGA would look at) Aronimink GC.  As the home club of Jay Sigel, who i believe has played in more Walker Cups than any other American player, it would be a fitting tribute... and a great site.

Howard, Yeamans didn't host the Women's Am this year, that was another Raynor in Charleston. But you're right, having a good relationship with the powers tht be at the USGA is a big factor.
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

That's a good strategy to ensure a US victory.  If the weather at The Open Championship this year was so hot that it kept galleries away (I think it got up to 78F one day) then South Florida in early September would kill the poor laddies from GB&I.

Good catch. My mistake. It was CC of Charleston. I can't trust my memory anymore ... and the tournament just happened a month ago.

Of course no one will be surprised by my suggestion: Oakmont.

But perhaps a few details may reveal this isn't a completely biased choice:

From the USGA website (!) FOWNES: THE OAKMONT ARCHITECT:

Over the years, particularly after Henry died of pneumonia in 1935, his son William C. Fownes Jr., who was born in 1878 and named for Henry’s brother, oversaw much of the course’s evolution. W.C. was an outstanding figure in golf history who won the 1910 U.S. Amateur. He was captain of the first USA Walker Cup team in 1922 and served as president of the United States Golf Association in 1926 and ’27.

For those who weren't fortunate enough to attend the 2003 US Am, Oakmont may be an even better match play course than stroke play, which is really saying something. I'll never forget how many times the par 5 12th was won with a bogey! The final between Casey Wittenberg and Nick Flanagan was something special.

I submit there may be no more worthy choice.

That's an excellent suggestion, with great history and no infrastructure problems.

Bring it back to Pine Valley!

Alternatively, how about San Francisco Golf Club?
