Britain's longest par threes
« on: September 03, 2013, 05:42:33 AM »
A friend asked me what were the longest par threes in the UK, prompted by a discussion with a member at Stowmarket Golf Club, where the fourth hole is a 250 yard monster. Anyone?

The 5th at Ansthruther maybe, 250 yds or thereabout? The 1st at Church Stretton isn't anywhere near as long on the card but it's probably only drive-able by gym rats.
All the best.

I think Painswick's 12th stretches to 250 yards from the back tee, but as Thomas suggests, it doesn't play as long as Church Stretton's opener.

Stoneham's 7th must be 230 from the back.

The 16th at Carnoustie must approach 250 yards.  I don't know how far back it goes for The Open.

The 16th at Carnoustie is the classic because it's been 250 yards since the year dot...

2nd in the old Renaissance Club routing was over 250 yards too... But you expect that more from modern courses...

13th at Addington was pretty long, wasn't it?

One of the longest par threes that I've played is "Big Dunt," the 249-yard 16th at Donegal in Ireland but, as this thread refers to British
courses, the 235-yard 16th at Montrose (Medal), 245-yard 17th at Port Glasgow and 247-yard 18th at Royal Burgess are perhaps the longest I've played in Scotland.

The 2nd at The Renaissance Club was 253 yards or something like that.  They told me that Ian Woosnam came over to play it, and it was into the wind, and he was incredulous that he had to hit driver on a par-3.

Old 2nd at Renaissance Club is 258 yards.

The 1st at Walton Heath (Old) is only 235 yards. That surprises me. I recalled it being longer.

The Addington 13th is only 230 yards as well.

The 12th at Painswick is 250 yards!

Absolutely. I was thinking it had to be 250+ just from memory of piping a fairway wood a few times and not reaching the green!

I seem to remember a long par three at Reddish Vale. Maybe 6 at close to 250 yards. My memory is a bit fuzzy, however.

What's the diff between a 250 yd par 3 and a 270 yd par 4 other than someone arbitrarily throwing a par number on it?

Adam,

I'm sure I've played other par 3's at or about the 250 mark apart from the 16th Carnoustie. The closest one I can think of off the top of my head is the 2nd at Killermont which is shorter at 243 yards (from memory) but its slightly uphill and is virtually a dog-leg with the canopy of a large oak tree hanging over the front left side of the green.

I think I hit 3 wood on 17 at Ganton which is 250+ and a very good hole.

17th at Ganton is 251 yards and can be played as a par 3 in Championships, whilst the members get a break of sorts as the medal tees are 247 yard par 4 before reverting back to a 235 yard par 3 for every day play.

13th at Notts (Hollinwell) is 240 yards off the back and into a prevailing wind.  Yes it might play downhill which can certainly help, but its not a big target at all!

Cheers,

James

Hole #6 at Dunaverty, Arthur's  Seat, plays at 245 yards -- about as long as some of the par 4s at the course.

I think the 5th at Anstruther is 235 but it plays more like a mile.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

The Third at Gullane #2 is 239 yards (on my 1981 scorecard), and that is up a REALLY STEEP HILL, to a blind green.  A startling hole, actually, with some honest length and character to it.

Thanks,
