bathtub green.... or fairway?
« on: August 27, 2013, 05:07:05 PM »

Okay, this looks for all the world like the famous 14th at Cruden Bay.

But it's not.  It's looking back down the fairway at Fraserburgh's par three 17th.  Except Fraserburgh put the green in the right place, IMHO.

Cruden Bay's 14th is interesting, but is it actually a good hole?

Ken,

Do you mean the 14th at Crudeness Bay?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

What did you think of the "half-bath" tub green on #5 at Golspie?

Ken,

Doh.

Fixed it.

As for more pics of Fraserburgh:

Proof of what rabbits can do. Morris Rogers, the greenkeeper says he has several guy out at night trying to reduce their numbers, one of whom is getting 30+ a night.  But they come pouring in from the dunes.

Played Bonar Bridge Ardgay GC today.  It's absolutely beautiful, but for a crooked driver like me, it's too much at only 5200 yards.  Lost at least eight balls before I gave up and played the last four with three clubs, seven, wedge, putter and reduced my scoring average by more than a stroke a hole.

The Kyle of Sutherland is overall gorgeous terrain.

By the way Mark, do you recognize this guy in long socks?

one more from Elie

Stan Dodd explained Elie perfectly the other day. He said that if you didn't see the card you could play it and never guess that it had 16 par fours.  Three of them under 290 and four of them 420-466 is brilliant.

I guess I never thought of it that way.

Lavera and I are trying to figure out how to best use our last full day in Dornoch.  Golspie, Brora and Tain are all possibles.

Glad you got to Bonar Bridge. It is a nice alternative to all that seaside golf. ;) The views overlooking Loch Migdale are great.

Looks like the purple heather is in bloom. Not quite as stunning as the yellow gorse in bloom in May-June, but still very pretty.

DT

P.S. One option for your last day is to drive to Portmahomack in the morning. Play the 9-hole course there. Have lunch at the Oystercatcher. Then visit the Tarbat Discovery Center, my favorite museum in the Highlands.

That last Elie photo looks like #13, one of my favorite par 4s anywhere.  Beach to the left, green benched into that big dune.  Wonderful.

Ken,

Thanks for the extra photos from Fraserburgh, "The Broch". Shame about the rabbit damage.

Nice photos of Bonar Bridge too. I've seen Bonar Bridge recommended by a couple of Highland regulars. Do you have any more photos of the course? Maybe a separate thread? A Tilly hat in the first BB photo?

All the best

It is a Tilley, on my wife's head.  That's her newest on, a tweed won in synthetic, quite pretty actually.

We both wear them all the time.

I have a few more Bonar Bridge pics.

I'll  start a thread.

There are a few bathtub or semi-bathtub (if that's a proper word) greens up north. For some reason the full bathtub ones seem to be triangular, such as the 3rd Moray Old and one of the par 4's at Buckpool (3rd or 4th ?). Other bathtub holes with the front of the green lying open include 4th at Moray Old and uphill par 3 at Granton on Spey.

Niall,

are you sure you mean the 3rd at Moray Old I remember it as been somewhat raised. The 2nd however.....

Uphill Par 3 at Grantown on Spey is the 8th.

I played Grantown on Spey for the first time two weeks ago (as a warm up before tackling Spey Valley in the afternoon) and was rather taken with it, especially the middle section between the 7th and 12th.

I can see why the people at Golf World magazine have included such a charming wee course in their last two Scottish Top 100 listings.

Here's a snap of the blind uphill 8th that you mentioned:

Jim,

Grantown is a cracking course, Braid at his best!!! I have always liked how he used the flatter land occupied by holes 2-6. Although the modelling is artificial it still looks great. It is a shame that the modified 13th and 18th greens are not of the same character as the rest of the course. Although the 18th green is a good it just does not fit and I am surprised they did not take the opportunity to move a bit closer to the clubhouse. The 13th looks very generic to me :-[

Still, well worth the effort to play it as is Boat of Garten just up the glen.

Jim

There are two uphill par 3's in the "middle" section and I think the one I'm referring to is the other one, can't recall the number.

It is a cracking course. I recall saying in a thread last year that it was the equal of Boat of Garten. I've since played the Boat a couple of times having not played it for a number of years and I'd have to say the Boat is better in all round quality. The holes across the road at Grantown are a wee bit of a let down in comparison although by no means bad.

Grantown also has one of the best driveable par 4's as photographed and posted on here by Mark Alexander.

Niall,

the only other up hill par three is the 11th which is not a sunken green where as the 8th is though it does not look so on Jim's photo. The drivable par 4 you mention is probably the downhill 9th though 1,4,13,15 and 17 are also reachable. Whilst Grantown is good BoG is a cut above. I agree that 2-6 are on pretty mundane land but I really like them. The 2nd is a solid par 4 with some cracking shaping on the bunkers, 3 has a testy shot into the green and the 6th is possibly the best green complex on the course. Still each to his own,

One of the great things about courses with roads through them is that you can go on Googlemaps and use the street view to check things out. The uphill par 3 that I'm thinking of is the one with the green adjacent to the first green. That likely is the 8th as the par 4 hole I was referring to is the next one over and which you think is the 9th.

That said, Jim's photo looks a lot more like the other uphill par 3 to me.

Niall,

I think you are right about Jim's photo being of the 11th. If you look at the photo on the clubs website which give a better impression of the green I think that will jog your memory.

Cruden Bay's 14th is interesting, but is it actually a good hole?
