For me, it is Prairie Dunes. Everyone knows about the Maxwell Rolls, but there are so many subtle interior slopes tied in with those buried elephants. I have been lucky enough to visit there several times and each time I am still left shaking my head at putts that go the complete opposite way I thought they did.

At first I was considering the Himalayas at St Andrews, but perhaps not, as the slopes are so severe and wacky that they arn't necessarily that deceptive. So instead I'd go for the opposite, nearly flat greens, where the slopes are so tiny, so fractional that they can't really be seen. One other aspect, particularly if you're playing walk up and just hit it golf, as against looking at putts from all angles, is how much green reading is done with the eyes and how much is done with the feet - it get's really confusing standing over for example a right to left putt with your feet below the ball and then the ball breaks the opposite way at the hole. Also, there's the effect of wind on a putt, plus grain too.
All the best.

Carl,

WFW's greens were always difficult for me to read.
I don't think there's a straight putt over 8 feet.

Baltusrol Upper always presented another dilemma for me.
While I read the breaks, I always seemed to under estimate the influence of the nearby mountain

I'll throw in Schuylkill Country Club in Pennsylvania.  It's the only place I've ever been where putts break UPHILL!  :)

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.   The influence of the steep mountain behind the course is so powerful that putts that look downhill may be steeply uphill, and putts you think are reasonably straight will break sharply away from the mountain.  Until you figure that out, you haven't got a chance!

Certainly the most deceptive greens Ive encountered. The AFA courses and others along the Colorado Front Range foothills like Hiwan and Rolling Hills are tough too, but for some reason the Broadmoor greens are totally confounding to me even though I've played them many times. I've been impressed by the ability of the men (Senior Open) and women (US Women's Open) to figure out those greens (somewhat) in a short time when they play the tourmanents there.

Good addition Dan!  There are some very tricky greens at Schuylkill.  When in doubt, it's going towards the river!
It was hilarious watching you scratch your head!!

Another nomination for the Eisenhower course at AFA. We played a college tournament there years ago. Even though the pro told our team everything breaks away from the mountain I still couldn't read putts. I was misreading 10-20 footers by a foot in the wrong direction - so two feet overall. Heaven help you if you were putting downhill away from the mountain and didn't realize it.

Grandfather has some flat looking greens that are all supposed to break away from the mountain but we four were flummoxed a few times.
