Golf in Scotland....in October??????
« on: July 16, 2013, 04:04:10 AM »
I have a week free the first week of October. Wife and daughters off watching Gymnastics World Championships, so I'm free also to play golf...

I have a little Walter Mitty dream to duck over to Edinburgh (only a two hour flight), hire a car and drive towards Gullane, North Berwick and Dunbar....courses that many of you compliment often here on GCA.

The only thing stopping me is the thought of how cold it might be - don't get me wrong. I live in Norway, and have all the gear needed to survive. BUT, is it a dream I should save for another (warmer) time?

Andrew there's a chance I can host you at North Berwick on Sunday 6th October.  Won't decide until September if I'm going up that weekend.    Keep in touch.

I think weather will be fine, but then I'm an optimist.  :)
Let's make GCA grate again!

Andrew,

Go for it and don't worry temp wise. If you stick to the East coast and courses like the ones you mention rather than venturing either inland or over to the West it's likely to be drier. Links are obviously, normally drier underfoot than inland too. One thing I do suggest though, is that you have some mittens with you to wear between shots.

Check-out the Golf Empire website. If you're lucky there might even be the odd open comp you can play in which normally lowers the price to play a course in comparison to the normal green-fee - http://www.golfempire.co.uk/

Have a great time and post afterwards telling us which courses you played and what you thought of them.

October is a great month to go and experience Scotland golf. Last time I went in late October, had frost delay then temperature got up to 65. That is part of the fun, they still play even if cold and rainy.

Andrew - My first trip to Scotland was during the first week of October 2003.  Conditions weren't significantly different from the first few days of my latest trip just a few weeks ago, when high temps were in the high 50s (June 29-30).  Have a great time!

Andrew,

Go for it! British weather is something to be accepted and embraced  ;D

The east coast is generally more benign and drier than the west coast, but here is a small selection of pictures from Askernish on the Outer Hebrides at the end of the first week of October a few years ago...

Warm, sunny and just stunning golf weather, though no wind as the Ocean was more like a mill pond. Its worth noting though that we got the ferry back to the mainland the following day in such a storm, I'm surprised the sailing wasn't cancelled, and I think most people kissed the land when they got to Oban!

Cheers,

James

Early October is usually the best time to play here in Scotland--courses less crowded, many greens at their very best, a bit of gnbarliness in many courses as the greenkeepers hibernate in Spanish before starting their winter programmes....

Life is good.

Any afterlife is unlikely and/or dodgy.

Gents,

Thanks for the positive reports regarding October golf. Booked the ticket this morning and will look forward to whatever weather is dished up. Whilst I don't expect Scots to be hanging up their clubs, in October we are closing courses here in Norway at that time as frost and the possibility of snow is nigh...I do recall watching the Dunhill Links on tv a few years back with well rugged up players....

Tony Muldoon - thank you for your kind offer to host. Unfortunately I fly home Friday the 4th and will not be able to meet you.

I in no way was looking for access or invites with my post....In hindsight I should have stated that outright in my post! But a full day at North Berwick will be a central part of my short trip.

Thanks again

I went to east Lothian and Fife last October and it was almost perfect. One day with very severe weather but we still found a place to play. I guess every year can be different, but the temperature wasn't an issue at all.
This October we are traveling further North to Aberdeen and Inverness.

Ps. They still have a few October tee-times available on Muirfield, just in case.

Hi Andrew,

As I'm sure you know, we British and Irish aren't quite as precious as our American cousins when it comes to golfers requesting a game... In fact, most of us are delighted that people are stopping by our courses....

Andrew,

Tell us a bit about golf in Norway, perhaps even open a new thread on the subject.

All the best

Thomas,

Golf in Norway doesn't hold too much appeal for a GCA enthusiast. Brian Philips, who lives here and is a course design architect would be in a better position to comment. However, FWIW, from my untrained eye, I've not seen much that would be worthy of a thread  :o

Agree with Ally, I try to get to North Berwick in May August and Sept/October and if anyone wants to get in touch for a game then I'll see if I'll be there.

I belive it was Mr Goodale of this parish who once wrote we can easily tell the difference between those posts that start "I'm taking the family to a funfair in Clementon New Jersey, anyone suggest a local game?", and those who are interested in knowing what's out there.

Enjoy the trip Andrew.

A quick report.

This past Tuesday at North Berwick. A fantastic place. A very friendly starter asked me what brought me to North Berwick. He seemed to like my "This golf course...just this golf course" answer. The welcome by the clubhouse manager was extremely friendly also. We played off the blue tees.

Had the wind at our backs heading out. I am no estimater of wind strength, but the forecast for the day was 15mph and it was that and gusting harder at times IMO.  I wondered about the possibility of launching one at the first green and then remembered I had left my driver back in Norway...

On the front nine, I did enjoy 1, 2 (left fairway leaves you totally blind  ???), 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9. At 9 I took dead aim right at the bunkers and it drew with the wind. Knocked it over the back and got down in 2 for birdie.

Back 9 heading back into the wind - 10, 11 green with a right hand back pin to feed poor approaches into the bunker. The siting of 12 green!!! 13 (the pit) where I hit my best 5 iron into the wind for a GIR par. 14 drive...requiring precision into the wind...which I didn't have and wound up on the 4th green. Took relief and found the green (absolutely blind shot) with another good 5 iron for a regulation par.

Redan played 165 yards to the pin into the full strength of the wind. Chunked a 4 iron that dribbled off the tee. Punched a 7 iron onto the green and drained a 40 footer for par. Bit of break on that putt!!!   ;D

16 - OOB off the tee, hit the wall with my 3rd shot from the tee that rebounded next to Redan green. Shanked OOB  >:(. Ended up with a 1 putt 10.

Loved 17 into the wind....felt like a par 5 with the trench bunker. Perfect drive down 18 into the wind. 99 yards to the pin. 2 fat attempts at a pitch and run and finally putted from 65 yards off the green. All in all, the back 9 was fun, fun, fun with a very challenging wind to see if your game was good enough.

DUNBAR the next day. Forecast 20mph winds that reached that and a bit more - played into on the way out, with us on the way home. Off the yellow tees. Best holes for my mind were 3, 4, and 7 in particular and 9 on the way out. . 10 with the old ruin farmhouse that I found myself in. 12, 14, 15 and the awkwardness of the burn in front of 17 green with a front pin.

Near blunder of the day....took aim at the 17th green when playing the 5th  from the white tee, before I was stopped by my member playing partner. He now thinks that that would be an awesome par 3 to try....

Highlight - the 2 older members who asked me to join them on the 1st tee as I was a single. Their demonstration of playing quickly, but effectively was eye-opening. They didn't line up putts, but judged them for break, speed and allowance for wind with impressive results.

GULLANE No. 1. This is more a test of nerve for you tee shots due to the ferocious thick rough. It beat me up pretty bad even though we had minimal wind for most of the round. Holes I thought were good were 5, 7, 11, 12, 13 and 16. Lowlight - 6 shots to escape a plugged lie from a fairway bunker on 16 on way to a 12! Highlight - 2 birdie twos on 9 and 16.

GULLANE sent off groups with a 7 minute interval. On the 2nd tee, we had the group in front of us waiting on the tee, a group waiting in the fairway, and a group on the green. 4 groups on a par 4 hole.   >:( It didn't improve much either the rest of the way. Shameful management practice and blighted my enjoyment of the course more than a tad. Life's too short to use 4.45 for a round of golf.

The best thing about links....the "ground game" around the greens and factoring run into your approaches (particularly North Berwick)

What I know about GCA you can write on a pin-head, but North Berwick a good head in front of Dunbar for enjoyable seaside links golf, with GULLANE No. 1 there to remind me that I am just a hacker who can't hit it straight enough.

I'll return to NB certainly, and probably Dunbar next year.

Regards
Andrew

Thanks for the report. Congrats on the good holes.  Having played none of these, NB definitely moves up the list.  Then again every non-poseur course I want to play,  ::)

Thanks for sharing.

This thread makes me very happy.  I'm just two weeks away from my much anticipated tee time at a few of those little golf courses.  I'm going to buy some hand warmers just in case!
I still like Greywalls better.

Played North Berwick yesterday with Tony Muldoon, FBD and Mrs FBD. I've played NB quite a number of times over the years but never have I seen NB so beautiful. Playing the back nine in the late afternoon light with both the sun and the wind at our backs was an absolute joy. As a fourball we played at a nice pace and let a few two balls through. Couldn't have been any better.
