When I see "Posts" and a number along side what exactly does it mean?

Mark,

Thank you, but I am somewhat puzzled. A fellow contributor referred me to a post I had written about Paddy Hanmer, the Secretary at Muirfield.
It was dated June 17th 2003; the number was 5838, some ten years later it is still 5838.

It is not that it matters one bit, but why have it at all?   However, if it was mileage points I woul be concerned.

Bob

The post count is dynamic.  No matter how old the post is, the number reflects your current post count.

Same with the avatar.  You could change it today, then look for an old post, it will show the new avatar.

A few years ago there was a site rejig and many old posters lost their 'count'.

Thus Mucci really has posted 50 000+ times, explaining why he's completely barking and non sensical these days..

Bob,
There probably won´t be a big blow out when you get to 10,000 and even less chance Erik will buy drinks but we will grant you one OT post that has nothing to do with golf course architecture and it will stay active for one week before being deleted!

Post counts are common on message boards as a sort of rudimentary tool for gauging how long someone has been around, how much they have contributed, etc. Thus if you asked a question and got an unexpected response, you might be more inclined to trust it from someone with several thousand posts, than one from someone with 2.

Obviously it's a very rudimentary kind of gauge at best.

I believe threads that have been purged over the years also take the posts with it. I have a feeling your number is larger Sir Bob.
