Alaska golf?
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:29:18 PM »
I am currently at a lodge near Talkeetna. Mt McKinley is out! Fantasatic!

Got me to thinking: Are there golf courses of significance, or at least worth noting, in Alaska? Has anyone played up here?

I'll check in when I get a chance. Fun.

Doug
Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!

The best courses are associated with Army and Air Force bases in Anchorage and Fairbanks.  There is also Settler's Bay in Wasilla which i played maybe 40 years ago If any reach a Doak 5 I would be mightily impressed. I see that Fairbanks G&CC no longer has sand greens.

Haven't played it, but the Palmer Golf Course in Palmer (of all places) looked interesting to me when I drove past last summer.  It's on the way back from Talketna to Anchorage (that is, by the less-than-direct route we took).  I think I read they had qualifying for Alaska for the mid-am there last year.  But don't quote me on that.

I played Eagleglen many years ago in a solstice round that teed off at 8:00 p.m.  Really, really fun.  Decent little course surrounded by dense woods and moose ponds.  Views of the Chugach Range from some holes.

Alaska is one of the most soul-stirring places I've ever been.  Golf is probably appropriately ranked (low) on the list of things to do while there!

I've met that bear, but he looks much younger in the picture.
