If the USGA can absorb and is ok with the loss of $$$$$ going to a great classic venue like Merion once every 10-12 years ? - Could a new rota be set up favouring classic venues/locations across the country ?

Here is the upcoming rota until 2020 - I personally see Chambers as one and done but I could see Erin Hills added to the rotation if over the top profitable and well received by all. I could also see Southern Hills/The Country Club added back into the rotation but maybe once every 20-25 years or so.

2014 Pinehurst
2015 Chambers
2016 Oakmont
2017 Erin Hills
2018 Shinnecock
2019 Pebble Beach
2020 Winged Foot

Best guess of a classic venue rota :

2021 Oakland Hills (should be in the rota with the upcoming US Am)
2022 Riviera (is the upcoming US Am a trial run for the USGA in Los Angeles ?)
2023 Bethpage
2024 Olympic
2025 Merion
2026 Pinehurst
2027 Oakmont
2028 Pebble
2029 Shinnecock

Thoughts ?

Would it be a bold statement to trim the rota and say goodbye to competing with the PGA over courses like Medinah/Baltusrol/Oak Hill ?

Would a move to classic US Open specific venues generate a special familiarity like the Open Championship ?

Oakland Hills is old but there's not much classic left in its (re)design.

How often do we think the USGA will accept less than the maximum revenue potential just to play at old courses?

Frankly, I view the (non absolute) trend in reverse, as in Chambers Bay and Erin Hills may be more along the lines of future US Open venues, providing they are well accepted by the players.
