I don't agree about #5 on the West Course being so ultra-wonderful, but that's OT and for another thread.  IMO, #11 is a much better hole and worthy of East Course comparison.

Malone's comment was the first I thought about this but his comment definitely sparked the concern this could be another Bethpage disaster. The 1971 open was limited to 14,000 spectators yet Herbert Wind called the galleries the rudest since 1962 Oakmont. (Presumably Oakmont was down to the unique circumstance of Palmer-loving Nicklaus haters.)

He also called the marshalls at Merion the laziest since Borodino in 1812. Hopefully this time we've got some real men working the ropes!

 I predict no ugly incidents at Merion. The New Yookers brought a "public " course attitude to their course.  The people I am running into are regular people with a golf interest. I hope we police ourselves.

 I just realized that Golf House Rd will be a great place to watch from. They will be able to move thousands of spectators without ruining the grounds. Will Ardmore Avenue serve the same purpose?

I'm less optimistic about Ardmore Ave Mayday.  That seems the logical transport path for the players and others from the West course.

Working on Monday at the USGS Members Clubhouse and mostly near 6th tee rest of week.

Just got back today from a volunteer meeting and I was amazed at the large number of people coming and going; mostly to the merchandise tent, I guess.

If the weather stays close to what is now; by Sat the course will be pretty fast and firm.

Ray - we spent a few bucks (too many!) in the swag tent yesterday.   It was great to see all the people taking photos of #16 toward the quarry - shows an appreciation for greatness.

 Reprorting from #7 mid afternoon Monday___play suspended.  The water table is full ,imo. One player made a ball mark from a greenside bunker

Merion's 11th hole not flooded, but closed Monday

11ARDMORE, Pa. -- Practice rounds were closed until 11 a.m. Monday morning at soggy Merion, and one of the courses lowest-lying holes will remain off-limits for the entire day.

No. 11, a little downhill par-4, resides at one of the lowest areas on the course, and a crew of no fewer than 15 workers were seen raking the bunker to the left of the green, while others were tossing shovel-loads of sand into in the trap from a course maintenance vehicle [photo above]. Said one volunteer working the rope line: "They've been struggling with that bunker all morning, but we think they'll have it ready to go tomorrow."

The 11th and 12th holes at Merion are reportedly prone to the occasional flood, stemming from a creek that runs around the 11th green before cutting across the 12th fairway. The course was hit with more than 3 inches of rain on Friday, and more rain fell overnight Sunday. Neither the 11th or 12th holes showed any signs of flooding on Monday morning. If the 11th and/or the 12th holes are unplayable during the tournament, the USGA plans to use the 4th and 5th holes on Merion's West Course during the tournament. However, the 11th and 12th holes are expected to be fine for the tournament.

I seem to recall him discussing his travel schedule following the Memorial and it involved a lot of time out of the country.
