At age 71, GCA.COM's own Pat Mucci took the medalist honors last Friday in the prestigious Travis Invitational! Playing in a two-club wind, Pat shot a 2 over from the championship tees to best many of the finest amateurs in the land in the qualifying round.

Congrats and nice playing!

Bill-

Are you sure you are not mistaken the Travis with another event?  The dates of the Travis Invitational are May 17-19 2013.

Pat,

Glad to see that all those tips you are given to your son, Ryan, are paying off.

Cheers, Mike

At age 71,

71? -Have we actually seen his birth certificate?

 GCA.COM's own Pat Mucci

Ok- We'll concede this point  ;D

took the medalist honors last Friday in the prestigious Travis Invitational!

The prestigiousness of the Travis is questionable  ::)

Playing in a two-club wind,

3rd hand accounts and video replays have verified that this was in fact a 1.5 club wind

Pat shot a 2 over from the championship tees

The championship tees were in fact moved up and were closer to the member tees

to best many of the finest amateurs in the land in the qualifying round.

It was a weakened field this year

Congrats and nice playing!

Well done!!  ;)

Mucci is my hero.

Anybody who doubts the power of sheer force of will to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles need only take a gander at Patrick.

What a stud.

I'm not surprised- he is a very solid ball striker and has a great short game. He's been in the heat of battle many times before so it's  fair to assume he isn't going to blink. I was also impressed with how far and accurately he hits long irons- especially his 2 iron. He may be 71 but his game is much younger- keep up the good play, Pat!

Bill,

You moron, I was the medalist at GCGC for qualifying for the Travis, not in the Travis which starts in two weeks.

There were 4 spots available and I was lucky enough to have a good round Saturday when I putted like a Pro
The next day I putted like Ray Charles.  Proving that the golf gods giveth and the golf gods taketh

Play was from the Championship tees.
I made the turn even and had delusions of shooting my age despite bogeying # 4 and # 6
I bogied # 18 to finish 2 over on a day with 1 to 2 club winds.

Nice going Pat, even if that's the warm up to the actual event. Nice to hear you can walk the walk as good as you can talk the talk.

In my book anytime you can shoot those kinds of scores in official competition that's worth respect. Even if it's over 9 holes...

Hope to hear more good news.

Bruce,

After 3 frustrating years of near misses I finally did it last year.

So much is dependent on the courses you play.

Courses like NGLA and GCGC are particularly difficult because par is 73

Other courses are shorter versus courses like Mountain Ridge, Winged Foot, Baltusrol  and others.
Had I played more at Preakness Hills, which is a terrific, sporty course at 6,500, I think i would have done it sooner and more often.

My dad shot his age from 67 thru 78, and that was before hi-tech

I always wanted to shoot my age at 79 and 85, and that still remains a goal.

But 75, on a par 73 difficult course, from the Championship tees on a windy day, in a medal play competition, is a very, very satisfactory round.

The week before, a man who was my physician, 60 years ago, told me that he almost shot his age.
I think he's 92, maybe more.
But here he was, all excited to tell me about his round and how he thinks this may be his year.

My dad always told me that golf was a game for the ages, and he was right, young or old, the challenge and fun are intoxicating.

Pat,

Does being 71 years old make you a Senior? It seems so young.

Congratulations and keep it going.

Bob

Patrick_Mucci

Jack,

The problem is that I'm hitting more and more 2, 3 and 4 irons and fewer and fewer wedges, 9 and 8 irons.

I was in the 8th fairway and watched a kid (21 or 22) who won the Met Amateur, bomb a drive over 320 from the 5th tee.
That's a 70-80 yard advantage.
That takes a 2-iron down to a 9-iron or wedge, and it's not just the length of the club, but the trajectory of the approach shot as well.
And this kid was of medium build, not a tall muscular kid.

Later, we were talking about the huge advantage that accompanies distance and how hi-tech has narrowed shot patterns.

We were also discussing how Merion, in order to protect par, has to narrow fairways, grow the rough and HOPE that Mother Nature co-operates.

We were talking about how courses, with generous fairway width are at such a disadvantage because hi-tech also produces higher ball flight, diminishing the significance of preferred angles of attack.

Bob,

Think of how lucky you've been to be able to play this great game for so much longer than the rest of us.

And, at some of the best venues in the world

Stay well
