Lou, I assume you were shakin your head all the way home about those grainy greens!!! I was thinkin for a while about using my PW for lag putting, but just chalked it up to the heat.. and wondered if they left the greens a bit shaggy to help deal with the 90-100 degF conditions or just hadn't gotten to punching them.
At the WCC we've aerated twice so far this year and they get verticut too, so they roll quite nicely.. i haven't had so many 2/3rds the length type chips and putts in some time, but did make some puts to par out the last 4 holes saturday.. and ms sheila's birdie on 3 was about 15 feet or so... for me it perhaps was more unfocussed indian in hot weather, keeping ice water flowing more important.
I don't dwell too long on my bad golf; like the high unemployment of the past six years, it has become the "new normal".
Bermuda loves heat. And I didn't think the greens were shaggy- they actually looked very good and the speed was adequate. They are just not being maintained to control the grain.
It is good that you remember Sheila's 15' putt. You might not have seen the 3' bird she missed on the same hole in the morning round which she gunned through the grain (I would normally say break, but grain is the larger factor). If you recall, she noted a few times how hard a time she was having with her putting, which, I suspect, is a strength in her game. And her aggressive, Tom Watson approach is the best for those types of greens, particularly if one is unconcerned about having to make the comebackers. BTW, perhaps I was too tied up tending to my wounds and missed your fine finish, but what was the total feet of your last four putts? I can't remember you making anything longer than 4' or 5'.
I don't know which public courses Mr. Clark is referring to, but the only course I've played with grainier greens in quite some time is the 9-hole pitch-'N-putt in our subdivision. TifEagle appears to be losing out locally in favor of MiniVerde and Champion. BTW, I think the excellent greens at Woodforest GC north of Houston are grassed with MV. Pine Dunes would do well to focus on the greens as Woodforest has, making them the feature which differentiates the course from its competition. OK, enough whining.
