Barnbougle Dunes - Doak/Clayton - PHOTOS
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:53:50 PM »
I think it was T-Pain, oh wait, it was Jim Colton that once said, “Pac Dunes would 10&8 any TPC.”  But after heading to Tasmania for a weekend I think he had his courses mixed up and he meant Barnbougle Dunes!  ;)

The Barnbougle story has been told many times and there have been many threads with pages of discussion, so I won’t get into all of that, but this is just to just show some highlights of the holes and how they currently look for those that haven’t been there in a while.

For those that don’t know, the nines are essentially two out-and-back loops with the front heading west to start and the back heading east with the clubhouse centralized between the two.  The outward nine plays mainly down in the valleys between the huge dunes and the inward nine plays across a much wider and elevated landscape in spots before returning down into the dunes for the last couple holes along the water.

A couple cool aspects of the course that stood out for me (aside from the beautiful setting and the views that went on forever) were the quadrants on some of the greens that allowed for balls to be worked across slopes and a few backboards that fed shots into certain locations. I really enjoyed this and in the photos you’ll be able to see what I mean. Greens like 2, 4, 5, 9, and 13 immediately come to mind for shots that I was able to play given my day’s hole locations and the greens were kept at acceptable speeds given the slopes which allowed for a lot of creativity and aggressiveness.  I also like how the bunkering wasn’t overdone around the greens and many of the recovery areas were short grass with all sorts of hollows and uneven terrain to play shots.  Mentioning the uneven terrain, in some aspects, and I mean this as a compliment, but it seemed like the course was blanketed over some sort of huge junk yard!  I’m not sure if I had a level lie for the entire day and I really enjoyed the challenge.

On my visit though, I had the very uncommon wind that was coming from the east.  Therefore, holes 1-4 played howling downwind and I also had the closing stretch of 15-18 downwind as well.  Point being, those downwind holes played much easier than they were designed as I had virtually nothing left for approach shots, but it also created an unreachable par 4 in hole #8.  I only bring this up because so many people bring up #4 at Old Mac being unreachable in the winter wind.  I’m a long hitter and on #8 I hit driver, 4 iron, 8 iron and was just short on a 490 yard hole.  Obviously, with the wind heading the other direction, it’s a different story and an easily reachable hole, but that’s just the way it goes.  I guess I could’ve played the course as a par 72 instead of a 71 that day.  :)

I enjoyed the course so much that Barnbougle is now my favorite Doak course among the 8 that I’ve played and that includes Old Mac, Pac Dunes, RCCC, Sebonack, SAB, Stone Eagle, and Lost Dunes.  I also wanted to note, for those of you that don’t know, Barnbougle is set up like Bandon.  You’ve got a key card to use for all purchases and all it takes is a swipe and you’re done. It’s a painless process.  The people who worked at the resort were more than pleasant and helpful and this is a destination that all GCA dorks need to go see during his/her lifetime.  Sure, this place is at the bottom of the world, but it’s really not that bad of a trip and it not near as exhausting as I thought it would be to travel down there.  Just get on a plane and go!

Here are a couple shots of each hole and feel free to comment as you please.  Enjoy!

About time Becker.  Thought you'd never get off your ass to get these photos up.

How good is the golf in Bridport?

Great shot of the 7th, although it is impossible to capture the true terror of that tee shot in photos.

When you get the Lost Farm photos up, let's revisit the hole by hole match between the two.

Jonathan,

Great stuff. Well done. I really like the 7th hole and 13th green. I'd love to get there one day. Is that a grass airstrip next to the left of the 2nd fairway?

Great photos. Always enjoy your tours.

All the best.

Just an observation:

This course seems full of the same, lost ball/unplayable grasses that were highly criticized on the thread about Trump Int'l.

Might seem so from the photos, but not really.  Generous landing areas help a lot in the regard.  Only lost balls will come from the off the planet type shots that would be lost on any course.

Thomas,

Thanks for the kind words and yes, that's an airstrip next to #2.  Vortex Air lands right next to the course.

Greg,

Like Daryl said, the landing areas are pretty generous.  I played in a 2-3 club wind and didn't lose a ball.  If you do hit it in the grass though I would stay out of there as there are a lot of tiger snakes in the area!  I saw one on #5 tee but it slithered off before I could grab my camera.

As written above, the landing areas are very generous at BD. Photos often make landing areas look more narrow than in real life.

Now the neighboring Lost Farm was another matter! I literally ran out of golf balls when my drive on 18 went off into the razor grass... and I was so ticked that I walked in rather than borrow a golf ball. (And as a 4 handicap this doen not happen to me very often :) ) But the course had just opened, and I trust they will continue to widen the playing corriders over time.

But you only started with a sleeve... right?  ;) Honestly though how many did you donate? Curious given your hdcp.

Did you get the Cabo plans figured out?

Lost 7 balls. Clearly a record since I have been shaving!

Luckily, the crows did not get any, but there is a crow at Lost Farm who prefers Pro V1's and took Patrick Kiser's best drive. I would LOVE to find where that crow takes the balls...

My daughter is booked to go to Cabo with her boyfriend. They are not sure if they are playing golf. (Which is a ridiculous waste of flying time, IMO...)

I think Barnbougle is my favorite Doak course as well.

This is pretty terrifying if you ask me!!!  :o

Surprised you remember the course... That Australian version of the flu was something, eh? Took me 2 weeks to feel human again!

Odd question since I know both Doak and Clayton but have never asked.   How did these two partner on this project and who did what?

Joel,

There is some great detail in the court papers from the owners' dispute and some old GCA threads.

In brief, I recall from that summary that Doak agreed to design the course but had been travelling a heap and so wanted a partner to team with on the work. And if my memory serves me correctly, that meant Mike Clayton Golf Design (now Ogilvy Clayton Design) partner Ashley Mead project managing the build.

To those that have played it, is the 4th perhaps not a little unsung? My initial impression is of a fantastic golf hole.

I think 4 may be my favourite hole on the course.
Sensational short 4. Love the tee shot. Superb green.
One of those holes where after you putt out you want to play it over again staight away.

Agreed Lyne. The green is genius, but gets overlooked because of the boldness of the bunker and drama of the tee shot.

And not unsung - gets a lot of love.

I don't think it's unsung particularly - I've seen it on a number of 'best short four in the world' lists - which is where it belongs imo. Best hole on a wonderful course.

Yes....a weekend from being in Melbourne for a week!

David E,

I'm glad you like photos.  I'll catch you on my next visit in a couple years. I enjoyed Australia so much that I'll be coming back.

As for #4, it was easily one of my half dozen or so holes that I couldn't wait to play during my trip.  It's funny though how things work out at times. You read threads and get an understanding of the winds and how a hole plays the vast majority of the time, then you show up and it's the complete opposite of what you expect!  I had #4 downwind and it was easily reachable which is not the norm.
