"The Wayfarer Inn is a good old-school place,"

Joel -

I think you mean the Wayfare is faux old-school, as it is only 4-5 years old, unlike the Tadich Grill, which has been in business for 160 years. ;)

Here are the menus. Soup is $12. The hamburger is $19, which likely is the most expensive burger in town.

Yes it fooled me as it certainly seems like it's been around for a long time.

So the Tadich Grill is recommended? It bills itself as the oldest restaurant in San Francisco. Sometimes I find those claims to be a bit misleading...I'd rather a place have good food than celebrate the fact that it has been in business for a long time, though I guess it's hard to stay in business for so long if the food and service isn't reasonable.

The food, especially the seafood, at the Tadich Grill is pretty darn good. They grill over mesquite charcoal. It is not a bad place to get a steak either.

Geoffrey,

I just returned from a Pasatiempo, Monterey Peninsula, Cypress Point and SFGC trip and my advice to you would be to enjoy them all as much as I did. They are a GREAT group of golf courses and are starting to even up my personal East coast bias. The Whaling Station in Monterey is a wonderful place if you are looking for a good steak. I would also urge you to check out the locker rooms at both Cypress and SFG. They are a "bit" of a throw back but are both wonderful locker rooms. At SFG check out the working fireplace and the telephone system which should bring a smile to your face. Give us the update when you get back.
