The link below takes you to a pdf of the Masterplan for the renovation of the New Orleans City Park courses, including a fairly detailed history of the various courses built on site.  I was more interested in the historical aspect of the article and the old photos, but the post-Katrina plans for the redo of the courses is certainly worth a read.

Some items of note:

- There's a bit of discussion regarding Joe Bartholomew (who worked with Raynor on Metairie) regarding his involvement with the creation of the Number 1 course (also called New GC).  Bartholomew worked on this project with William Wiedorn, a landscape architect with no other design credits I am aware of, which makes one wonder who had the most input regarding the golf related design feature.

-  The first iteration of the golf course in City Park was the course built and used by the New Orleans Golf Club, which became the city's first public golf course in 1915.  The club moved to new grounds at that time, building the course that became New Orleans CC.

-  The St. John GC, which played on the City Park course, is noted as the longest operating private club that plays on a public course in the country.

"There's the golf hole; play it any way you please." Donald Ross

Swen,

Well, OK, I am interested in your post as my wife is a NOLA product and I frequent the city semi-regularly. I even used to bring along golf clubs in the early years to play at Metairie and NOCC. Lately, I leave the clubs at home and just bring my liver.

I agree that the history is interesting.

Having scanned the proposal I am dumbfounded at the scale of  $$$ which the the city actually contemplated  sinking into a municipal golf complex at a time when, frankly, the municipality was flat on it's ass broke and broken.  If  they ever build a museum  to commemorate politician's dunderheaded ideas this would qualify. Was there ever a bond offering to cover the extra 26M+ not funded by Uncle Goriilla and the US taxpayers? I googled and found no mention.

Would you invest in that bond offering???

Still, thanks for the post.

Has anything ever happened?  Are the courses open?

I'd be happy to learn more, have a daughter there and haven't played much golf.  I did play the course along the bayou at City Park which a nice old fashioned layout without too much going on.
