Survey: What Yardage Do You Actually Play From?
« on: March 01, 2013, 08:50:47 AM »
Following up the thread about the "need" for long courses, I wanted to take a survey of participants on this site, for some reference data.  If you would be so kind, please provide the following numbers:

1.  Where did you play your most recent round of golf, and what yardage did you play from?

2.  What's your home course, and what yardage do you normally play from?

For me:

1.  Streamsong (Blue), 6698 yards.  We had it set up right on the blue tee plates for the Renaissance Cup, and with a little wind, a bunch of people complained about how long it was, how a couple of par-4's were unreachable, etc.

2.  Crystal Downs, 6302 yards.  That's from the white tees.  I only play the blue tees now when I have a guest who wants to.  It's still only 6518 yards from the back.

Swinley Forest, off the whites, 5761 yards.

Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire (though I haven't decided if I'll renew) - usually off yellow, 6282 yards.

Montclair Golf Club - members play the whites at ~6300 yards - back blues are ~6550 but get <10% of the play - I am a 12 and when I travel I seek out the 6200-6500 tee markers - golf is fun for me at those distances

1) Pasatiempo - 6,500 yards (par 70)

2) Kingsley - Usually play the members (mixed) tees as 6,480.  Occasionally play the gold at 6,900 or the blue at 6,300.

I play most courses at around 6,700 unless it's shorter, at altitude or in the desert. My home course is right around there... Sometimes it takes a combo of blue and backs on other courses to get there.

I usually play whatever tees are closest to 6500 yards. Living in New Mexico, playing at 6800 feels comparable given the elevation.

1. Myers Park, Charlotte, NC-6600 yards

2. Little River GC-6400 yards.  Unfortunately we only have 6400 or 7018.  I don't like punishing myself every round.

I always prefer to play a tee around 6600 yards wherever I go.

Tom,

At Kingsley I now split my time pretty equally between the Blue tees at 6309 and the Whites at 5755 (my last round was from here).  I only wander back to the mixed (6480) or gold (6956) if a guest or wager dictates it. There's a huge advantage to carrying some of the large fairway slopes or hazards to gain the most advantageous part of the fairway on holes 1, 4, 8, 14, 17 & 18 so the "as the crow flies" yardage is somewhat misleading.  In fact I consistently shoot 2-3 shots better from the whites than the rating and slope differential would indicate relative to the blues.  In general, I no longer feel much desire to play beyond 6400 yards as it becomes a slog of fairway woods, hybrids and overswinging with the Driver. My previous club typically set the member tees up around 6600.  Combined with the fact that it was overwatered and overmanicured it just became too much of a grind where the primary challenge was distance.  One of the reasons I'm no longer a member.

Streamsong Red up one from the back - except for a few holes from the dune tops - too long for fun - especially at the end of a long 2 days of playing
Tom, I'm surprised some would complain about long holes on the Blue - especially given the group - ???
The blue was great fun from the one up tees - shooter must have thought it was easy though with his 7 birdies

Wolf Point from the shortest walk - 6400ish

Last played Pine Tree from the member tees at 6646. There are two sets of tee behind that at 6982 and 7315. The set up is at 6209. Cheers.

I agree with Nuzzo on the Blue. Gee, I thought Shooter had 8 birdies. Just think if he could putt.

Last round: Bent Pine Country Club in Vero Beach, FL, played the blue tees from 6,779 yards (on the card)

Home course: H Smith Richardson in Fairfield, CT, play the blue tees regularly from 6,662

I find that I prefer to play courses at 6,800 yards and up to 6,900...anything over that and it becomes a grind.

For me:

1.  Streamsong (Blue), 6698 yards.  Played with three lefties in a 4some for the first time.

2.  Dismal River (Doak)  guessing 6,719.97 yards.  With the dogs.

The last course I played was New South Wales GC.  A mix of member and back tees around 6750 yards.

The course I play the most is 6600+ yards from the back tees.

Depending on who I'm playing with on the road and if it's not at elevation, I'll play the member tees or up to 7,100 yards.

1. My most recent round was at my home course, Columbia Country Club (Blythewood, SC), and I played the black tees at about 5,700 yards. That is just about a perfect yarage for my game during cool (35F-55F) and wet winter weather.

2. Columbia CC is my home coruse and I normally play those 5,700 yard tees although I also play the 6,250 yard white tees occasionally during the summer. If it's at least about 70F and the fairways are firm and dry playing from 6,250 suits me fine, although the game is still more fun playing up a bit.

My most recent away round was at Papago in Phoenix and I believe we played it at just under 6,400 yards. Given that the course was playing pretty firm that was fine but I'd say it was pushing my limit of a fun length. Quite a few Par 4's were not realistically reachable without hitting two "career" shots in a row. And the Par 3's are as a group too long for me on those tees.

The Meadow Club, about 6300 yards. That's where my host wanted to play.

Home course 6400 but moving up to the white tees at about 6000 yards.

While I don't remember the yardage from the very last round that I played I do remember one of the last I played was 6,962 yards at Pine Valley Golf Club.  And the only reason I remember that is because that is the exact yardage that we played the GAP Open Championship at last July.

1.  Dunbar.  Mostly tips.  ~6400 yards.
2.  Aberdour.  Usually tips.  ~5500 yards.
