Upper Hudson GCA Getaway - Is there interest?
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:41:25 PM »
With spring threatening, at least per the calendar, I'd like to gauge interest in a GCA Getaway to the Upper Hudson River region.

Date: TBD but Probably before summer hits stride.
Courses: The *get* would be Ross' Glen Falls CC, which I will work to arrange with enough interest.
Other possibilities include:
Emmet's McGregor Links in Saratoga Springs
Emmet's Schuyler Meadows, Mohawk, or Edison
 Travis' Troy CC
A number of 9 holers, including Emmet's Mechanicville, the 19th century Saratoga Golf and Polo, and my club, the Battenkill CC
The public Saratoga Spa course, a William Mitchell course that is well loved, and IMHO speaks the lie to the 1960's as a dark age.
Travis' Ekwanok, which I would also work to arrange with enough interest.

If you have an interest please post or PM.  If there are other courses you think are make or break, toss them in.

Dave

I would play if I am in town.  I think Mohawk Golf Club is a better course then MacGregor

Glens Falls is a treat, Saratoga Spa is a good one as well haven't played It in years i have heard the conditions are much better these days. I could help arrange some of the local privates.

I enjoy Wolferts Roost, a bit quirky and short.  I think Glens Falls is much better than Sagamore  but some like it.

I haven't played Ekwanok

Dan, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I'll add the Roost.  When you think about it we have an embarrassment of golden age courses here that are off the beaten path, and not, I think, because no one would beat a path to them.  :-)

I'm currently trying to get to Sebonack for the Women's Open, as Michael "Pup" Taylor will make a working appearance. If this shindig fits in that window (and if welcomed) I would do my best to make an appearance.

Glens Falls could be my CCTroy gem-of-the-year, from what I've read within reliable sources.

I'll see if something can fit in the US Open time frame.   Having driven by Glens Falls a number of times now I am very excited to see the course.  The land has a lot of roll to it, and Ross of course looked to make the most of it.

You all need to make Ekwanok happen...it is truly special!

I will be in Manchester for a month this summer with my family - the life of a teacher! - and will be trying to get out there again.  Played it about 10 years ago when I was a PGA Apprentice in Burlington and was astounded!

Passed my PAT up the road from Glens Falls and always wanted to get over there but never made it happen.  I like Sagamore very much.

I've also always wanted to get up to Lake Placid but it always gets negative feedback.

Cheers

I am a newbie, but depending on dates would be interested. I have a friend who plyed Glens Falls several years ago and loved it. Equinox is next to Ekwanak. It is Travis, redone by Rees Jones and is ok.

Of course it would depend on dates but I'd definitely be interested in making it out.

That's a baker's half-dozen so far, and dates around the end of June preferred.  Interesting comments on Ekwanok.  Others interested?

David,

I would be interested, depending on timing.  End of June would not work that well for me, so I may miss out, but if it is another time, I would definitely hope to make the trip.

End of June would be on the front end of the Women's Open (which is scheduled for June 27-30). My goal is to be at Sebonack Monday or Tuesday through Thursday, so I could make a guest appearance or two from the 22nd -24th and the 28th to the 3rd of July.

If that works, then I'm lucky. If it doesn't work for me, everyone else will have a blast. David is setting up an awesome lineup with:

Troy
Glens Falls
Ekwanok
Equinox
Mohawk
Sagamore
Wolferrt's Roost

Jim, that might keep Tim away.....

Ron, At this point I'm just trying to gauge interest.  Looks like there is general interest so I'll take the next step to see what can be done.

Thanks everyone,  Dave

I'm curious how you guys go about getting on these private clubs. Obviously The Sagamore and Equinox are resort/public facilities but Troy, GFCC, Mohawk and Wolfert's Roost are all private. And in the case of Ekwanok, VERY PRIVATE.

Is it generally with a member or a member introduction? I just can't imagine calling Ekwanok and saying "Any chance a couple groups can get out next Wednesday"? 8)

Would love to join but late June is probably a no fly zone for me. I'll keep an eye out and hope I can make it.

I will be up in upstate NY in late June with the family and might be able to sneak away for one day. As we get closer please keep me in the loop as a potential fill-in.

Mr. Blain, that is an excellent question that I will be working to answer. I am not a member at any of the courses listed except Battenkill, which you don't need to know me to play.  However, I am only a few degrees of separation from most, and am committing to work those degrees to setup an outing.  Ekwanok, specifically, may be probabaly is a bridge too far; calling the pro shop will not, however, be my main thrust ;-)
