Restoration, Renovation, and....Redesign?

At the risk of driving the Emperor back to his other kingdom, I was watching a DVR of the "Northern Trust" and saw this graphic on the screen.  What in the wide wide world of sports is a "redesign" of a classic like Riviera?  On the Masters telecast will there be a category like that?

Perhaps George C. Thomas would be fine with "redesign" being used in this instance.

Depends what Tom Fazio did at Riviera.

Generally:

Restoration - Return routing, contours and bunker shapes & positions to a previous design
Renovation - Alteration of bunker shapes and positions, moving tees / lengthening
Redesign - Change in the routing, building new greens with different contouring

Therefore something like Hawtree's work at Lahinch (which I like) was sold on the premise that it would return the MacKenzie spirit (i.e. suggesting a middle ground between restoration and renovation) and whilst it may have done that to a certain extent, the work was in truth more like a middle ground between renovation and redesign, erring towards the latter...

The term "Restovation" has been used by Lester George and others in the past here. It seems to refer to this type work that splits the difference between renovation and restoration.

It probably has something to do with the ongoing work on number 8. 

What year was the right hand fairway re-introduced? 2002-3? Did Fazio do some additional work after the tree removal on that hole?

From looking at diagrams of Thomas' original 8th, the new hole is similar but the green is totally different and the wash came more into play in front of the green (on the left hand side as well as the right).  I think "restovation" is the right word.  There are no routing changes (other than a new route on so it's not a redesign.
