Depends what Tom Fazio did at Riviera.
Generally:
Restoration - Return routing, contours and bunker shapes & positions to a previous design
Renovation - Alteration of bunker shapes and positions, moving tees / lengthening
Redesign - Change in the routing, building new greens with different contouring
Therefore something like Hawtree's work at Lahinch (which I like) was sold on the premise that it would return the MacKenzie spirit (i.e. suggesting a middle ground between restoration and renovation) and whilst it may have done that to a certain extent, the work was in truth more like a middle ground between renovation and redesign, erring towards the latter...
