#'s 8-9, 17-18 par 5s
« on: February 12, 2013, 05:48:44 PM »
I asked this question elsewhere and no one seems to be able to come up with an answer....

Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne closes out both nines with consecutive par 5s.

Are there any other courses in the world with this par 5 configuration?

Thanks

Jono,

Yarra Yarra GC on the Melbourne sandbelt goes close - 8, 9, 16, 18.

17 is a 363-metre (400-yard) par four.

Getting closer, Scott!

Saltzman told me that Sara Bay in FLA has 7,9,17,18 as par 5s.

Still looking for another like Victoria though.

Becker,

Sevillano Links in Northern California can be stretched out to a 10,500 yard par 90 so there

You're welcome  ;)

Sigh.  That doesn't count.  Try again.   :)

Don't know of any myself.

Closest I've played is probably Connemara which has 5's at 17 & 18...

I can't think of any off the top of my head but Rolling Green GC comes real close.  The course closes par-5, par-5.  The 9th is a brutally long par-5.  The eight is not a five par BUT the 7th is.

Is the thread a curiosity, or can we run with it to some nether region of GCA? What does it matter, beyond curiosity, what the par-centric configuration of the course/nines is/are?

Note to threaders: this is not I being a prick; this is I asking a probing question.

Happy VD.

Just a thread of curiosity, RM.  I've never heard of a similar par 5 configuration on any other course is all.

By the looks of it, too, Victoria appears to be the only one.

I think finishing the nines with multiple par 5s is fairly interesting from a few standpoints:

- First, in a match play scenario, you have more strategic choices of aggressive vs conservative to try and make up ground / protect a lead.  I suppose the same potential for movement would apply in a stroke play tournament as well.

- Second, most people think of Par 5s as scoring opportunities.  While playing your own ball, "looking forward" to a strong finish at the end of each 9 is interesting.

- As for the 8/9 finish, since many courses may host afternoon 9 hole leagues, having a dramatic 8/9 finish could be just as important as the finish on 17/18.  The same logic would apply for Nassau matches.

In our region, we come pretty close at Coudersport Golf Club, which has:
#7 - Short Par 5 with pond fronting a tight green (3-8 is in play)
#8 - 90 degree, drivable Par 4 with OB on inside of dogleg (2-7 easily in play)
#9 - Mid par 5, without much trouble (reachable with 2 solid shots)

#17 - Mid-Long Par 5 with 2 very good shots (OB left off tee)
#18 - Short Par 5, easily reachable if you flirt with OB inside dogleg

I always looked forward to the closing stretches at this course knowing a birdie-birdie finish was not out of the question.

Having said all that, I wouldn't expect an architect to go out of his way to create this type of finish.  However, if it happens, I like the anticipation / drama that can occur in those closing holes.

Baltusrol Lower finishes with two par-5's. Olympic Lake has three par-5s, #1,16 and 17 - which is part of the reason the golf course feels like an endless series of mean-ass par-4s.

Perhaps it feels that way because it is?!

Especially yesterday, playing a match on the Lake Course against Jeff Stettner - who hits it 30 yards by me when he catches one.

When he was 26 and I was 43, it was a fair match. Add 10 years and play a guy who hits 8-iron approach shots on the same hole where I have to pucker up and slash a 4-iron . . . . . . well, maybe I don't belong from those tees anymore.

The course I grew up playing, Hop Meadow CC (Geoff Cornish, 1961) ends with two par fives. But the ones on the front are 2 and 6...ho hum, though if you're ever playing a Foursomes match, you want the longer-hitting partner teeing off the even holes, I reckon.

Manchester CC in Connecticut (Bendelow/Emmet/Tillinghast initially) has its par fives at 3, 4, 14 and 15, meaning all par 5s are adjacent to one other--unique in my golf experience.

If the land makes it seem prudent, I'm all for it. More than a few times at Hop Meadow I found myself a couple/few down on the back nine, thinking "Let's just get to the 17th tee. Anything can happen on those last two holes."

Jonathan,

Absent a very unusual site, would finishing back to back par 5's on both nines be an indication of a very poor overall routing ?

I immediately thought of Connemara when I saw this thread!  Was my first overseas course played.

The downwind/upwind finish made for some interesting shots coming in.  Not sure what the prevailing wind is there, but it was straight up and down both holes and certainly made the holes feel very different.
