Chappers

Yes, I had no idea what was going on with Prestwick's 3rd as well. I thought it legged left so tries to cheat left.  It was a lucky break because I would have gone into the bunker if I knew to hit it straight.

13. Liphook

Belongs in any list

Brian, at first it was a close call between Liphook and North Berwick for 13, but the fact I still haven't worked out how best to play it and what you see in those photos made it a no-brainer for me.

Come to think of it I'm surprised I didn't get any Berwick holes in as I loved the course and considered 9, 12, 13, 15 & 18 for the list, though all just got edged out. If you ask me tomorrow though I am sure I could come up with a completely different list and Berwick would be in there.

Anybody else get through the list and then realise they had missed out one of their favourite courses?

Tom/Brian - having played the 13 a number of times during BUDA IX at Liphook - in the last round I decided to drive onto the 12th fairway and it did give me a flatter lie and a much easier angle to the green and I ended up with a birdie. All the other times I played it down the fairway it kept getting kicked to the right because of the fairway slope and the ball was below my feet and it was harder to hit the green.

Tim Bert,

Good show on Vanderbilt Legends 5 South and 17 North.  I'm very fond of both holes as well.  It's really amazing that in the "architectural wasteland" (credit Tim Weiman) of Nashville two great holes exist within a few hundred yards of each other.

I'm putting together my list of favorite short par fours and am having a hard time leaving either off the list, though the 5th at Cuscowilla and 17th at  Crystal Downs are under consideration.

I play out onto to 12 if I go in the heather on the left off the tee, but aiming for that fairway on purpose from the tee seems pretty dangerous, not least for anyone coming up the other way. Surely you have to hit a huge hook around/over the trees tight left of the tee, which is pretty hard? I am starting to think hitting 3-wood to stay up on the flat is the play. It leaves a long approach in but still reachable and far easier given the horrible slopey lies you get further down the fairway.

Tom,

I actually hit a high and long draw and noticed that the group behind was actually on the 12th green. The ball managed to clear the trees with ease and it left me with a long iron to the green. It is a flaw in the design that I had exposed - I am sure Mr Boon will testify as he was a witness.

3 wood will get you on the flatter part of the fairway but a longer second shot which has to clear the heather to get onto the second part of the fairway so there is an option of laying up with a longer 3rd shot.

Cheers
Ben

Ben

I find this tactic bizarre.  If you feel comfortable taking on a very difficult and risky shot out to the 12 fairway, why not just hook it into the 13th fairway - there is loads of room for this shot?  You are plenty long enough to leave an iron approach which you can scuttle up to the green.

Sean,

Have you played with Ben?  If there's a lunatic way to play a hole he'll find it, so long as it involves hitting the ball miles.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I can testify to Ben going down 12 from the 13th tee at Liphook, but I can't recall the details and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a crazy hook from the tee  ;D however I am more than happy to testify to Mark's comments above!  ::) ;)
