Just arrived home an hour ago after a great week at the Cabo del Sol Resort, and Greg, we'd like to thank you again for putting this all together. The weather was fantastic, and it was great to put faces to names and have the opportunity to golf with other GCA'ers (and their better halves), especially at such a great place.

Re: room 2017...
Anita's description of the room's extracurricular activities - 10:30am round two - at lunch the next day was extremely impressive after what we heard from directly below, just hours earlier, from, oh, about 3:20am until sometime past 5am. Needless to say, my iPod came in handy for awhile. What was funny too, was that later that day, after golfing, Brenda and I returned to the hotel and went in to the front desk where I asked for a different room. Getting old I guess. Anyway, the kind young lady asked what the problem was. I smiled at her and said "too much noise coming from the room directly above us". "Sex". "Middle of the night". "Loud". She returned the smile and said certainly, they would move us to another room, but they would like to show us the new room first (not that any room in that hotel is bad). So, one of the male staff was called and he walked with us toward the elevator, at which time he turned to me and asked what kind of noise had been bothering us. Was it construction noise? At this point, the elevator door had opened and in we walked, and upon heading up, I put my hands in the appropriate position in front of me and showed him a nice pelvic motion (nowhere near him, just to clarify). He almost fell into the buttons on the side wall of the elevator laughing.

Anyway, thanks again Greg. Will add more this weekend.

Loev the pictures, looks like you had a great time.

Any chance this will be happening again?  Would love to attend

The plan is to host it again... same time of year?

On the 8th hole during one of our 5 rounds on the Ocean Course, I hit a bad approach shot short and left of the green. The pin, if I recall correctly, was near the middle of the green. I had some 25 yards to the edge of the green (correction: really bad approach shot) and decided to putt the ball. (see Greg's photo entitled "Close up of the left side of green at #8"). Not focusing quite intently enough, I pulled my putt just enough that I watched as it rolled up that corner of the green complex, and then fell off and down to the left, down in the swale. Crappy putt and a worthy result. My next putt stopped a foot from the pin.

Ugly bogey, but I actually thought it was fun.

Just wanted to add my kudos to Greg for arranging a great outing, and thanks to all of the participants who helped to make it a thoroughly enjoyable gathering!  Suffice to say being treated at Cabo del Sol like it's our own private club spoils us for any future visit to a resort.  Terrific golf courses and great company!

As to the discussion of the Ocean Course's 8th, I really enjoyed the hole.  The up-front pin placement was fun--on the last day I hit a solid 5-iron approach toward that hole.  As it flew in, I was afraid might bound off one way or other off the "tongue" of green in front, but it settled nicely at 20 feet or so, for a par that satisfied.  The back pin requires much more distance on approach and certainly makes it a different 4.5-par hole.   One of the charms for me of the Ocean Course is the rhythmic variety of shots required--for example the pair of relatively short, consecutive one-shot holes (6 &7) are preceded by the more challenging #5 (my favorite hole on the resort) requiring a long approach, and followed by the longish par 4s 8 & 9.  In that stretch an average-drive distance player might have approaches of:

5 200yds running
6 170yds, can come in low if you choose
7 120 aerial
8 160-190 aerial
9 180+ aerial or running

On the back, testing approaches at 10-14 are all aerial from a variety of distances, then the easier 15th and 16th can be runners, followed the heroic 17th and a daunting finishing hole.  I feel Nicklaus and team did a great job setting up a variety of fun and challenging holes.

Well worth the trip for all of you considering!

Gratifying to see the new 5th hole getting so much respect from the group. I really think the new sequence from 5 through 8 is considerably better than the original and unquestionably rivals, not only in overall setting but actual golf holes, the more famous and often discussed final three holes.

Thanks to everyone who attended the event. As I noted, it is quite enjoyable to host those that really love the game. I don't recall how many stories of golf trips that included 13 rounds in 14 days or 7 rounds in 4 days... etc. Already looking forward to next year and a bigger and better event.

Nothing like an ice storm in central NC to bring back great memories from Cabo!  I've never experienced such fantastic weather for consecutive days as during the TQ.  It's interesting to me that I keep referring back to my Ocean Course yardage book while my Diamanté guide is in the closet.  Both are great courses but something about the Ocean has caused me to study it more.

Nothing like your basketball team being up 13 then allowing a 22 to 3 run in less than 5 minutes to make one want to go play golf a little early!! Man oh man.

Update the run reached 40-12 then we really gave up... Now I know how Mucci felt a few weeks back.

If only we had gotten a call here, a bounce there...  ;)

Just got back to my computer, thanks to Greg for inviting me to this golf paradise. 80 degrees in Jan. is awesome even for a Cali guy. Wore shorts for the whole trip and even took a break from golf to take a dip in the ocean. Played 27 holes, then 36, the place made me feel like I was in my 20's again, last night trip to Cabo Wabo confirmed I can handle my Tequilla better now.
Playing golf with Jason Topp for four days was better than watching the movie Fargo, dontcha know.
Meeting the mystery golfer and hearing his jokes on the way to Diamonte was a highlight.
Having dinner twice with the whole group and hearing the great golf stories from everyone was terrific.
The 36 holes at Cabo Del Sol were spectacular and Diamonte was really unique the way the holes were built right on top of the dunes by the ocean. I will never look at the dunes between Fort Ord and the Monterey Bay the same without thinking that they could do the same as Diamonte there.
My favorite holes on Cabo Del Sol Ocean were the 17th and the 7th(my birdie there had no influence on my choice).
At Diamonte it was the 17th, a great par five. The 11th gets honorable mention because of the made to order Margaritas and tamales at the tee.
Cabo Del Sol is really special place and no golfer should miss it, Greg is a great host. 8)
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

As far as i know, the man remains interesting, the fox remains in the henhouse, and the beans remain unspilt in their container.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Thanks Tim, pretty easy to host a group who wants nothing more than good golf and good food! That said I might suggest there are better places to sample tequila than Cabo Wabo, as cool a place as it is.

Brad, We know a thing or two about beans down this way though keeping them contained is rarely a good idea.

Thanks for posting all the pics.   I enjoyed all the comments from the players.  Pretty much confirmed a lot of the discussions you and I have had previously.   I wish I could have joined you, but count me in for next year.   I expect after this picture gallery and comments, that many more players will be trying to work this into their schedule.
Well done!

We'll see if I can wrangle an invite for you next year  ;)

Played 18 today for the first time since May 19 and had a 15 MPH wind most of the day. Holes 6 through 13 were tough as nails.

Of the strecth from 5 through 8, #5 actually played the easiest albeit requiring knock down 4 metal to get home. #7 on the other hand was a little monster with a front right pin playing all of 113 yards - land maybe 15 feet from the hole and walk off with a nice double.

Do not recall this game being quite so difficult as it was today.

Brad,

Can we get an update on the most interesting man's trip to Daytona?  Wonder if he's learned the rebel yell?
