Has anyone here actually has been to Canyata?  I have not and I am wondering what it is like.

I played Canyata on a beautiful day with a few Golf Digest raters when it first opened.  I love the place as I guess did they.

To me the one clearly missing is Lake Barrington or Barrington Shores or whatever the hell the name is. Very cool greens and other stuff.

Is that Barrington Hills, a Geo. O'Neal? Never been there but have heard other similar reviews from other valued sources.

Can someone post the Wisconsin 12-13 list? Thanks.

Erin Hills is not a better golf course than Milwaukee CC.

I love reading these things for free but could we please just pony up a buck and pay.  My soooooo favorite rater of all time was dismissed from a panel for releasing information before it was published.  I know if I ran a panel and saw my guys publishing my competitors information which hurts the industries already suffering profit model I would take away their card.  Be careful.

I really believe we could have got Paul to pay if he had asked the third time.

Ah yes, leave it to a road builder to express dismay at information being passed around for free in this era of the Web/Twitter/Tumblr information overload. Once the Internets make the post office and UPS obsolete, we'll have even less need for rebuilding our infrastructure currently being ruined by all those delivery trucks. ;)

Adam:

Cornish and Whitten list it as a George O'Neill, dating to 1920, in conjunction with Jack Croke and Jospeh A. Roseman.

Very. Right up there with the groupthink of the 38 Chicago based Golfweek raters who marched in lockstep to bash the place.  You must have heard the rumors.

Yeah, I really dropped the ball on that one when discussing the Illinois state exclusions.  I have Barrington Hills in my Top 10 in Illinois....easily.

Best hidden gem in Illinois IMO.

Maybe I'm just trying to set the Course #1 bar really low so that its inevitable jump once the renovation is done makes Tom and his group look really really good.

But, that said, the Bob O', Chicago Highlands and Wynstone sect may not be as keen as you seem to be on my apparent resolution.

I like Barrington Hills. Always have. But I don't think there's anything really cool there architecturally-speaking. It clearly makes my Top 10 Courses With Uninspired Architecture list.   Sorta like the way I feel about Itasca and Elgin and Naperville and Edgewood Valley and Inverness and Lake Shore and Pine Meadow.  Nice course. Like it.  Enjoy playing there.  Great piece of property.  Uninspired architecture.

Would you include Cantigny with that group? Seems to fit - a great walk, nice property, perfectly enjoyable course, but only a few holes (out of 27) that stand out (IMHO) architecturally.

Played  Briarwood this past Summer with a fellow GCAEr as my host and was pretty impressed that Mungeam during the reno got as much out of the property as he did. The par 3 's were really solid and some strong par 4's. Conditioning was excellent as were the green speeds. Another under the radar above average Chicago club. Have to believe if Bob O and Sunset Ridge would rev up the chainsaws you would find some pretty good golf hidden there.

For all you non Chicagoans, I was a Chicago resident for 53 years. I lived on the far north side and traveled 3 times a year to play Cog Hill #4. I loved the course, great topography, can't believe they would rank it #12.

Anyway, you get the drift, terrific course, day in day out
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary,

Dubsdread was a very good course until the recent renovation.  It's not the course you remember unfortunately. I wouldn't even have it on the list anymore personally, although I'm sure it scores higher in RS.

Jud -

I 2nd your belief that Cog has slipped post renovation.  I played there 2 summers ago and found it narrow, long, difficult, and worst of all, boring.  Most holes seemed to lack character and were very redundant.

Disagree. It's a better course, even if it's more difficult. Better fairway bunkering, more dramatic greensites (except  #7 which is poorly done), better sightlines and a more consistent look and overall feel. Pick the right tee box and it is much better.

my personal chicago list

1. Chicago
2. Butler
3. Black Sheep
4. Medinah #3
5.    Shoreacres
6.    OF North
7.   Bull Valley
8.    RH Links
9.    Chicago Highlands
10   Medinah 1
11.    Knollwood
12.   North Shore
13.  Merit
14.  Elgin
15.  Barrington Hills

Haven't played: though they would likely be in the top 15 -- Exmoor, OF South, Bev, Skokie, Bob O Link

My list is probably fairly close to the GD list.   Big difference is that I like Bull Valley and Black Sheep much more than most.   I think both are truly hidden gems and would be significantly higher on the list if they were each  20 min closer to Chicago

For all you Chicagoans why is there no mention of Glen View?   Site of the 1904 U.S. Open,  I thought it was a wonderful course
and very enjoyable.  Certainly there is no comparison to the likes of Cantigny and Kemper Lakes.

Good question.

The club has a great history and quite a few fantastic golf holes.  Its a great course to walk.  Its also one of the most exclusive clubs in the area, and I think the members enjoy their low profile status

If it is lacking in any way its due to:

(A) a tendency to flood after any period of sustained rain: and

(B) a lack of interest on many of the drives (not every hole, but quite a few where the demands placed on the tee ball don't measure up to that found at other courses in the area).

One of my favorite holes on the course is the short par 4 17th:

This photo is taken from the 18th fairway.  From the tee, the player can opt to drive up closer to the green, often leaving a tough pitch from below the bunkers to a green that slopes pretty severely from back to front.  There's a tree on the right side of the fairway that places just the right amount of doubt in the players mind when standing on the tee, and a good argument for keeping the chainsaw in the shed on occasion.

If you're looking for a strong test, play the back plates (they have a name, but I can't recall it at the moment).  The back plate for 18 sits just off to the left of the 17th green in the picture above.
