Courses played in 2012 that were Surprisingly Very Good
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:20:49 PM »
This year I had the good fortune to play some very good golf courses across the US. I started the year at LACC in January and wrapped it up at Fishers Island in October with a large number of great courses played. This thread is NOT about the great ones we all have played and read great things of but rather the courses you've never played before in addition to having never really heard anything about them. The two categories I think of are the one's in your local metro area and the others that you will simply add onto a trip to fill in an afternoon slot. My findings are:
Chicago Area:  Naperville CC- very well done renovation with strong set of par 3's and a great set of short par 4's. Surprisingly  undulating
piece of property for Chicago.
Briarwood CC- another nicely done renovation, some excellent par 3's, very strategic bunkering and some very interesting green complexes. For a flattish piece of property the design is pretty darn good- surprising that you rarely hear Briarwood mentioned among the top 15 or 20 in Chicago- it definitely belongs there.

Nationally: Mountain Ridge- this was the surprise of my year. This course got "sandwiched" after a morning at Somerset Hills and a day after Quaker Ridge, both very fine layouts. The talk amongst us after playing Mtn Ridge was basically why in the hell have we never heard of this place? The use of the elevation changes is brilliant, green complexes are as interesting as any Ross/Prichard work we had seen amongst us. Conditioning of the turf was superb due in large part to effective tree clearing. After we discussed Mtn Ridge post round we could not understand why it is completely under rated or NOT rated amongst the major publications. In any case, these were the courses that I had not played before but would make a strong effort to play again- what were your surprises this season?

Wykagyl in Westchester was a wonderful surprise.  The course has some significant rock outcroppings and abrupt elevation but it is quite a nifty course with motion in the 3 dimensions and numerous challenging holes.
The trouble with modern equipment and distance—and I don't see anyone pointing this out—is that it robs from the player's experience. - Mickey Wright

what were your surprises this season?

I liked The Concession more than I thought I would  the turf was great for golf. And although it was tough, it has options and was playable.

Wexford Plantation was really good.

For me:

Battle Creek, Michigan
Chiberta, France
Pine Dunes, Texas
Sand Hollow, Utah
Himalayan, Nepal

Each of them was quite a bit better than I had expected.

Tom, I, too, had a chance to play Pine Dunes this summer and a quite liked it as well. I suspect that you might also like Wine Valley in Walla Walla Washington. You should put it on your list -- if there is still room -- for your updated Confidential Guide. It appears not to get any respect from Golf Digest, but it is worthy.

I had a chance to play Black Lake in Onaway Michigan and it was probably one of my best golf experiences that I have ever had.  Black Lake is a UAW course open for public play.  It is located in Onaway Michigan (about and hour away from Gaylord and Petoskey) which is off the beaten path.  The layout is simply fantastic and this course is tight which makes you think long and hard about each and every shot.  The course was in wonderful condition when I played in in June and it is a must play if you take a trip to Northern Michigan.  Additionally I payed $40 to play it and I might of been the only person on the course.

I traveled to Gulf Shores Alabama and had a chance to play Kiva Dunes and loved every minute of it.  Although it does have a resort feel to it and loved each and every hole.  The only knock was it was very busy and the rangers did a poor job keeping groups moving at a reasonable pace.

Michael,  Each time I have been to Ireland with one exception I have played Dooks- the time I did not I regretted it! What a nifty golf course that the tourists generally avoid and talk about bang for your buck!

One other course I forgot to mention was Yarrow in Augusta Michigan.  This course is in the middle of nowhere but has lodging that can accomodate up to 100 guests.  I would highly suggest that any groups in the Detroit or Chicago area check this place out.  The course was in amazing shape and has an "up north" feel.  The clubhouse sits 100 feet over the 18th hole and is a great place to sit with the boys and drink a cold Oberon while trading war stories.

Idle Hour in Lexington, KY - Really great, relatively unknown Donald Ross course that's received a fantastic renovation recently from Ron Pritchard. Reminds me of a tougher Lawsonia with a more compact routing.

ArborLinks in Nebraska City, NE - A very solid Arnold Palmer effort that's really only held back by some unplayable native areas.

Honorable Mention to Prairie Club (Dunes). Obviously it's been discussed quite a bit here, but it also gets a lot less attention than other courses in the Nebraska Sandhills. I expected a good course, but wasn't prepared to spend the next few months debating whether I had a new favorite.

Some of y'all have never been called out in bold green font and it really shows.

Crown Colony was much better than I expected.
Dismal River and Prairie Club Pines were much better than I expected.
Wolf Point was also even better than expected, I think it's the best course in Texas.

David - glad you enjoyed Wykagyl! I've only been a member there for a year and a half but love it.

I was surprised by how much I liked Montauk Downs.  Beautiful course and interesting holes.  And agreat clubhouse with a lot ofncharacter!  Only downsides were so-so conditioning and a VERY long (>5 hour) round.

A couple of places I saw in 2012 that surprised me include:

The Club at Carlton Woods (Fazio): I thought this was quite good. Didn't know a ton about it before playing, but thought there was really good variety of holes. There was a nice flow to the course. And it was quite walkable for a housing development course.

Eugene C.C.: Super solid golf course. I expected it to be good, but exceeded expectations.

North Oaks Golf Club (MN): Played it for the first time since the Lehman renovation and thought it was a nice improvement.

I remember when we teed off at Carlton Woods they thought we were nuts for walking, I too found it an easy walk.

Castle Pines GC definitely qualifies for me - my expectations were, shall we say, tempered but I came away feeling it is one of Nicklaus' finer designs, rivalling but not quite matching Muirfield Village.  CommonGround would be my runner-up choice - lots of architecture out there considering the budget.

On the other side, I felt let down a bit seeing St. Thomas G&CC just outside of London, Ontario for the first time.  It's a noted Stanley Thompson design and while I can appreciate the layout if I squint hard enough, my overriding impression was shock at how badly they could use a chainsaw for overgrown trees on a number of holes, both to open up playing corridors and to give much needed sunlight to areas of need.  I understand that they are working on that problem and hope to see the course again when they are finished with the project.

Unquestionably, in the best hidden gem category was Victoria Golf Club, in you guessed it Victoria Canada. Great city and an even better golf course with several holes hugging the coast line. Will Mac Ewan's recommendation of staying at the Union Club was the cherry on top!

Harrison Hills, IN-  I'd read about it and was excited to see the remaining original 8 holes, and it still exceeded my expectations.

Broadmoor, IN- Under the radar Ross courtesy of the Midwest Mashie.  Great set of greens which are getting to once again see the light of day with the ongoing tree clearing program.  I had no preconceptions going in and came away duly impressed.

Playing at Schloss Langenstein in Germany was my most unexpected and pleasant golfing surprise in 2012. A fair, few top class class holes but most notably the 17th, which runs through a rocky valley of what I would describe as 'Apache Country!'

Four surprises for me were

1. Sutton Coldfield (England) Winter Course.   One of the relief par 3s is better than either of the two summer par 3s taken out of play.  Two of the long par 4s converted from 5s are better.  The course has more elbow room in winter and is far more enjoyable than the overly tight summer version.

2. Birmingham CC (Detroit).  Very good set of greens and surprisingly hilly terrain that isn't overly taxing.  If the clubs sorted out the flatter holes by the entry drive and a few spots here and there, BCC would be more than just a good course.

3. Ballybunion Cashen (Ireland).  While deeply flawed, the course presents a ton of very cool shots.

4. Knole Park (England).  I was intrigued by photos of the course previously seen, but the pix didn't prepare me for the bold routing over the hills.  Several standout holes in a lovely park setting.

Ciao

Raleigh CC was a very pleasant surprise.  The course was ready to close when the McConnell group bought it and Richard Mandel restored the course.  It was Donald Ross' last design and has some outstanding holes with great greens which are very quick as well as some great bunkering.

Chapel Ridge is south of Raleigh and to me is a hidden gem.  The course has a great variety of holes including risk reward par 5s and driveable par 4s.  There is plenty of width and options while the greens are well contoured and very well kept for a very reasonably priced course.

The Dormie Club is a very good C & C course which is a must play if  you are in the Pinehurst area.

Pleasant Surprise for me this year:

Hurstbourne in KY.  I believe Keith Foster did the re-do, solid routing with no weak holes.  Par 3 18th finisher with the clubhouse behind is very memorable.

Forsyth had some of the most fun and enjoyable green complexes I have seen in a while.

Chapparal Pines in AZ surprised me.  I thought I would like The Rim more, but I liked how the course moved with the elevation, no silly elevation changes like you see in some mountain courses.

Midland Hills, St. Paul Mn- A Raynor design that doesn't get the love it deserves.

Golden Valley Golf and Country Club, Golden Valley, Mn. Restored to original A.W Tillinghast design in 1998.

Rivermont, Atlanta GA. Way better then I thought going in. Great Surprise!
