The Unique and Stunning Beauty of Streamsong
« on: December 22, 2012, 10:16:48 AM »
Hello all,

Yesterday, I was passing through Lakeland and had about a four hours before I had to be back in Tampa.  Even though I'm not playing Streamsong until next week, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to tour both courses and snap some pictures.  Unfortunately, I only had my phone, so the quality is less than desirable...my apologies!

Streamsong will undoubtedly be photographed and discussed on GCA in great detail.  This won't be the thread to do so.  However, these pictures give an idea of what Streamsong has to offer.

Streamsong is magnificent.  I can't compare it to another place....it is simply unique.  The lakes and subsequent dunes that were created through excavation and mining give the site its unique appearance.  I could go into a paragraph laden with adjectives and hyperbole about Streamsong...but, in the end, it is simply unique...stunning...and beautiful!!!!!  I am looking forward to many years here, and it will be wonderful to watch both courses mature.  Wow...what a place to spend a day...

Great photos.

Hard to believe that's south Florida.

Can't wait to spend a few days there

How is the practice facility ?

How windy is the site ?   Mildly, moderately or noticeably ?

Hey Patrick!

Yes, hard to believe it is Florida:)

I barely looked at the range, but it looked very nice.  It was very windy yesterday due to the front that passed through the day before.  However, since it is inland, I don't imagine it will be especially windy on a daily basis.

Pat,

The Streamsong site does feature wind a fair bit according to Tom. When I was there last Winter and got to attempt to play it( my game was in a wretched state and my mind was sadly not there that day) it was an eerie Scottish-type day with: cooler temps, wind, mists and even a couple of squall-like rains, though the intensity was just short of that. Though that degree of weather may be somewhat atypical, during my other prior visit (Jan.) to the site, with Tom present to give us an overview, there was a stiff breeze that day as well.

My take is that during the Winter months, which including the shoulder seasons should constitute the prime play periods, there will be a breeze or better influence quite frequently. Breezes in the warmer months will also be most welcome, so long as they are not of the hurricane variety; central Florida in the Summer can be a blast furnace!

Happy holidays,

Wow.

There's a comment here regarding the "empty spaces" concept raised by Don Mahaffey in another thread, but I'll leave the analysis up to those that have been there.

It will be interesting to see if one course is favored over the other and if there are specifics to explain what makes it so.

Lots of water on the front 9 of the Coore/Crenshaw design it seems. I guess that is the give away that this place is indeed Florida!
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Beautiful pics, looks like two very intersting and natural courses with some great greens.

What I did really notice was the amount of water in play; seems to be a lot more than at other CC & TD courses I have seen pics of.
Is that the case or do the pics misrepresent?

Thank you, Matt. Who could ever write "hard to believe this is Florida" unless tongue was firmly planted in cheek. Water, water everywhere and not a ball to save.

When the Legends on the Niagara complex (near Niagara Falls, Ontario) was built in the 1990s, the great mystery was which architect (Carrick or McBroom) picked his piece of land first. To this date, I don't know. However, I suspect that if Coore and Doak flipped a coin, Doak won.

I played here yesterday (Red Course) in the early morning. Folks, run don't walk to get the chance to experience this place.  If that was a mild day for wind, as Kyle said, than this course is all the more fun for it.  It's wide open, so the references to this being a "Florida" course due to the water are off the mark.  This place is like nothing in Florida.  I've lived here 35 years and played all over the state.  I can't wait to get back and try the Blue.

This place is special.

Another Florida comment that baffles me. Florida courses are not wide open? You mean they are carved through all of those Florida woodlands? The first five holes of the Red look like a Coore-designed Florida course.

And, if Frank was shooting images from the tee box, they look penal as hell off the tee ball, EXACTLY what a tourist needs.

Well, a project I've helped pour heart and soul into since May 2011 is now open.

Frank's photos do well, but as with everything they do not capture the scale of the place.

One of the things most surprising when the flags finally went out is how much the features of the site dwarf the standard golf features. The flag is literally swallowed up in the green.

What Frank's, and any, photo do not capture is that while the amount of forced carries may seem excessive, all are into some extremely generous fairways that will be manageable by the day to day set up. Play the appropriate tees (which will be the Black Tees for most of this crowd) and you should not have an issue.

There is an anecdote in every one of these photos for me. Some I may share, some I probably never will. If you happen to make it to Streamsong, please don't hesitate to ask for me in the golf shop and I will make every effort to come say hello.

Please enjoy.
