I believe John Huggan dashed his piece off, 3-4 days ago, whilst sweltering in the heat of Melbourne's hottest night on record since 1901 with the temperature at 27 degrees Celsius around midnight and only falling to a cool 24.6C a few hours later. Compare this to the cooler climes of bonny Scotland where the average temperature at this time of year is 1degC - 6 degC and therein may lie a reason for what you consider was an addled piece of writing. Poor John was, by all accounts, sweating on this piece!
Just out of interest were these "… baguettes." you found considered by you to be crusty writing or just mere bagatelles!
