Fox Run in North KY
« on: July 14, 2003, 08:52:56 AM »
Has anyone played this course?

It is like JM's Badlands in Vegas but in the midwest.

Some landing areas were 15 yards wide.

Fairway drives rewarded with 6 inch difference between ball and feet.

Really surprised to see this Art Hill "gem" pop up on GCA.

Very hilly - carts required. A few decent holes. The 18th is the worst par five in golf. Last time I played (Labor day '02) the course was in miserable condition. To be fair, we were quite desperate for rain about that time.

Probably as bad a value as can be found for what is advertised to be a top public course.

Go play Lassing Pointe in nearby Union, KY. Or better yet, drive an hour south to Kearny Hill in Lexington. Both are much better courses and much better values.

Yes, the land is very hilly, and the budget was undoubtedly tight, but AH has done much better work around here- Shaker Run in Lebanon, OH, and Champions Trace in Lexington. KY, to name two.

I think Fox Run is actually a pretty good course. Shaker Run is much better but Fox Run will make for a memorable round. There are several memorable shots at this course. Although 18 is a tricked up mess, I actually kind of enjoy it. This is not a course you would want to play every day or for that matter more than once a year, but that one round will have enough to it to make it worthwhile. Its been a while since I have been there - are the fees too high now. I remember a few years ago they seemd to be in line with what was offered.

It's been four years since I lived in Cincinnati and played Fox Run, but as many others have already stated, there are many better places to play.

Fox Run isn't even Art Hills best work in the Cincinnati area. The course is usually in decent shape, but it's mandatory carts (yuck) and there are a few goofy holes. And it doesn't help that 18 is very, very tricked up par 5 that I just hate.

Here are other public suggestions:
Lassing Pointe -- the best public course in Northern KY by far
Shaker Run between the 'Nati and Dayton is good as is Walden Ponds.
There's a quasi-Nicklaus course on the west side called Aston Oaks that's cheap and interesting (though I only played the original nine holes)
Elks Run is an upscale Norman on the East side.
Legendary Run is also a Hills, but is much better.
Two good munis are The Vineyard and Glenview.
In addition, Heatherwoode near Dayton is pretty good as well.

I haven't played the new casino course in Lawrenceburg.

Plus, as discussed before, there's always Kearney Hill an hour away and the new Beltarra casino course on the way to Louisville.
