There aren't many good/great places to play golf in January.

Agreed.   Arizona and Palm Springs are a crap shoot in January.  I froze my ass off  at Rio Rico, south of Tucson, a few years ago.  Same thing in Palm Springs in January.   Central Florida should be much more reliable.
