Great par 3's without bunkers.

I noticed that Tiger included two par threes without bunkers on his new course. Where did he get this inspiration?

I'm assuming that you're referring to 9 and 16? From the rendering it seems like they'll both have some other hazard/surface come into play. In that case, the 6th at Royal Ashdown Forest is the most famous hole at the course. 10 at Pac Dunes also has no bunkers. I find that its a very good par 3 but it's overshadowed by the 11th.

If I'm interpreting the rendering correctly it doesn't seem like there will be a lack of hazards/waste areas on those holes. I could be wrong though.

Conner,

Thanks, I forgot about the 10th at Pacific Dunes.

JakaB,

The 6th hole at Preakness Hills a 230 yard par 3 didn't have a bunker until recently when a bunker was introduced to replace a huge oak that guarded the left front of the green.that was lost to lightening and disease.

A creek runs down the right side, from tee to green and beyond, with woods right of the creek and woods on the entire left side of the hole.

It was selected as one of the most difficult 18 holes in the Met NY area

John:

I think the greatest par-3 I ever saw without a bunker was the old 7th at Royal Liverpool, known as the Dowie.  It was 200 yards, with a shallow swale at the front right of the green, and o.b. hard against the left side of the green ... like, 5 feet off the putting surface.  Just an amazing hole to watch people "attack".

The Dell Hole at Lahinch is another top pick.

Also, I can't remember for sure, but I think the 5th at Royal Worlington & Newmarket, the great nine-hole course near Cambridge, is bunkerless.  There is a stream that you could wind up in to the right, and a deep grassy hollow to the left, with a three-tiered green on a ridge in between that someone once likened to a vaulting horse.  I should build a hole like THAT somewhere, even though it would probably be the last course I ever built.

Langford edition answer:

The 7th and 17th at Spring Valley GC, in Salem WI (home to another thread floating around here).

The 6th at Lawsonia (the boxcar hole)?

I think the 4th at West Bend CC is a really nifty par 3.

Bart:

Thanks for the pictures.  We should probably clarify, for those unfamiliar with the hole, that you tee off across the previous green, which is immediately in front of the tee, as seen in your first photo.

No picture can really illustrate how difficult that hole is if you miss the green anywhere but right in front.

#13 at Barwon Heads Golf Club and #16 at Paraparaumu Beach are darn good bunkerless par-3s.

The boxcar hole at Lawsonia is the seventh, but it's the first one that came to my mind. While we're on Langford, the fifth at Kankakee Elks is pretty good.

I doubt Tiger got his inspiration from it, but the now 8th hole at Uplands Golf Club near Toronto designed by Stanley Thompson.

Dave,

Do you have a picture of 5 at Paraparaumu?  No bunkers there either.
And at the 2nd there has bunkers short and completely out of play. -Its also bunkerless anywhere near where you hit the ball.

The 17th hole at Winged Foot (East) doesn't have a bunker if I remember correctly.  About 240 now from the tips, the green is extremely severe back to front and the green angles just enough from the front right to back left.  Any miss other than short right is absolutely dead.  With greens at tournament speed a miss left makes it hard to avoid a double as it is almost impossible to keep the second shot on the green.

Sorry I don't have a picture.

Leo,

Maybe the two best bunkerless par threes in the game are on the same course? That 5th is a brilliant hole - better than 16?

FYI Lawsonia's 7th, the boxcar hole origianally had a bunker to the left of the green.  There has apparently been some consideration of moving the cart path and restoring this bunker.

+ 1 for Paraparaumu 5th and 16th. Played the course last Saturday morning in completely benign conditions and both holes were still brutal. My pick would be for 16 though, they are doing a bit of work to 5 (by the looks just relaying turf between tee and green, not really altering any playing sections) and that hurt the asthetics a bit but i just love how 16 sits. The slopes on either side of the narrow green just stare back at you with a wicked grin as they know your only 120m away but sweating over hitting a super accurate short iron. I took a 6 and its right up there with the 9 i took on 15 at Kingston Heath as my all time favourite wipe :)

Wolf Point's 6th & 15th easily

P.S.
John - Tiger's holes haven't been built yet.  Good chance some bunkers will creep in... "bunker creep"
Each of the holes below had a bunker at one point on the sketches
Don certainly made it easier to get rid of them...
