Anybody know the details?

Definitely tough finishing holes, especially with the prevailing wind...only course at Bandon finishing toward the north.

I thought they had flattened and extended the 16 green on the left side last time I was there - it used to be very difficult to stop a ball running off the green on the left.  14 seemed a little more generous as well - wider in front.

I actually like 18 but I know that puts me in the minority.

When this type of work has happened in the past this board is quick to blame the architects. This time we must blame the critics.

I posted an article about this back in March during my most recent visit to Bandon...below is the link to the article I found...

Based on the title of your thread, perhaps the scope of the work has grown since then...

Why fix what ain't broke?

Brian, I love Trails, but when Bill Coore says the following about #18 - I tend to defer to him...

In another development, the resort revealed that Bandon Trails will be shut down next winter for a couple of months while Coore and Crenshaw do some work on the 18th green. "Personally, I've watched too many balls do a U-turn and roll 30 yards down the hill in front of the 18th green," said Coore. "I don't think we ever realized how fast the fairways on Trails would get."

That also happens on my tee shot which doesn't reach the top of the first hill.
I'll be down in a month and see what I can suss out.

Could be...

We all know 14, 16, and 18 have already had some nips and tucks.

Maybe the resort is just stating that there will/are changes made to help satisfy everyone who has been less than enthused about Trails' finishing holes w/o extending the scope and perhaps focusing on #18.

just fun to speculate...thanks

I call BS on this. The jury has spoken. 14 still sucks. 18 makes little sense off the tee. 16 is quirky and debatable. 17 is tough but good. C&C did great on the rest, but the finish was spotty.

I love #14 and love the fact that an architect and owner are willing to piss off golfers once in 18 holes.  I might smooth out part of the area just short of the green.

I'm not fond of the bunker on #15 that impacts the drive.  Maybe they'll just lop part of that thing off.

#16 to my mind is the only bad hole at BT.  As I recall there's really only one place to stick a drive, and it's pretty small (otherwise the ball rolls way back toward the tee).  Likewise, I remember the landing area for the second shot as being narrow with trouble on both sides.  And as someone mentioned, it's easy to roll a (blind) uphill shot off that green and into trouble.  I don't know what you do with the thing.

#17 can be severe, but too bad.  Hit a good shot, you're rewarded I think.  It is a beautiful golf hole.

#18 if they want to keep balls from rolling off the front of the green that is fine with me.  The hole seems a little shoe-horned, but what else are you going to do?

Isn't #14 exactly what you want in a hole? Everything I read is that half the people love it, half the people hate it. You're never going to please everyone, so might as well have them be passionate about it one way or the other.

agreed

as to what Bill Coore observed on 18...the 2nd shot is very difficult there, uphill into the wind and don't be short...

Trails is/was the toughest course at Bandon, but with repeat plays you can learn to love Trails despite it's tough finish

Love Trails but the end bangs me up, both 16 and 18 play into the wind and 18 is blind off the tee with often a blind second.  I don't dislike either hole but it's a hard finish, especially if you tried something silly on 14 like driving it - which I would try every time!  So what's my fix?  Make either 16 or 18 one-half par easier...somehow.  Or don't change a thing, I really do love it.

BT 14, 15 and 17 are great holes--please don't water them down.  I wouldn't mind some minor changes to 16 and 18, but hasn't that already occurred?

Once again, what I heard is that #18 would be remodeled significantly, with the crest of the fairway brought down several feet, so a player can see the green from the tee.  In addition, the 18th green will be moved over to the left and made less severe.

#18 is a very difficult hole in the northwest summer wind.  No easy shots, unless you can bomb the ball down to the bottom of the hill.

I thought #14 and #16 had already been modified.  If I had to guess, they will likely modify #14 some more.  My friend Dusty made two tap-in birdies in three attempts last month.  I think I went x-4-x.

Don't change 14! On a classic course we would all be speaking in defense of a landmark hole, so don't change it on this great course either, I say!

15: What is there to change?

16: Worst hole on the course; shorten it to a par 4 of 380 - 400 yds by moving the green and it will work fine.

17: One of the best par 3's at the resort, don't touch!

18: The blind drive doesn't make sense on a resort course;  Probably shortening the hole by 30-40 yds would solve the problem. If you miss your tee shot and can't see it land it means often a lost ball on 18 with no recovery option, that's why shortening the hole (at least from the standard tees) to deal with the blindness of the tee is probably a good thing.
The approach is fine. What's wrong with a ball rolling back if you are short? Par does not have to be easy on 18, even on a resort course. But the risk of loosing your ball after a tee shot into the prevailing wind is too big I think.

I adore the entire course.  #14 and #18 are very difficult for me, but I love trying to reach the green in two on #16 with a low liner.

We high handicap golfers are too stupid to find golf holes difficult. We simply accept what happens to our shots as a matter of fact. I love Trails. Don't change it. So what if the ball comes back 30 to 40 yards at 18. Just another chance to practice 50 yard putts.

Closing it at the time of year that I would be playing it sucks.
