Old threads on tree removal/opening up courses
« on: September 23, 2012, 12:42:40 PM »
I am looking for reminders of previous threads that contain before and after photo evidence of courses that have done a good job of opening up the course by cutting trees/cutting undergrowth etc. I think NGLA and Oakmont are prominent examples but happy to see more modest examples.

Any help appreciated from those with the memory or tech skills!

Philip,

As a somewhat tech-challenged frequenter of the site, I can't provide you the direct links to what you are requesting. There are several threads of courses that have had extensive tree-removal work done. My suggestion would be to look at course threads that come up with some tree-related context and search there. Highlands Links, under the fine restoration efforts of Ian Andrews and his team, has some solid photos of what's possible. LACC North's recent restovation, under Hanse and friends direction, had several good examples of holes enhanced by removals and canopy thinning. I know there are plenty of others. If you have more questions feel free to IM me and I should be able to help you out.

Cheers,

I don't have any "after" photos but watch Medinah this weekend and compare it to the photos on the internet.  What you will see on the TV is dramatically different than what you see on the internet.

Or find a current aerial of Broadmoor, site of this year's Mashie, and compare what you see with the writeup about the course on gca. No more bunkers in trees or canopies blocking fairways. Great work there returning a Ross to its glory. . .

Philip,

NGLA, Shinnecock, GCGC come to mind, as does Mountain Ridge and Somerset Hills.

Their tree clearing efforts produced dramatica results.

Thank you gentlemen, that is hugely helpful. There is a very instructive before/after on Philadelphia Cricket courtesy of Joe Bausch and the Dunlop White Interview also has much food for thought. Will try to find someold pics of National and Shinnecock to compare with my own more recent pics.
