Rat and Toilet Plunger Club (Photo Tour) All holes posted
« on: September 21, 2012, 12:30:26 AM »
I'm not being disrespectful in the least, I LOVE this place. The club dislikes publicity so I am using a pseudonym which my good friend and member utilizes to describe the club logo (tongue in cheek of course).

PM me if you need to ask the name of this club. Lets just discuss the GCA without mentioning the name. Hint...USA. Many of you will know right away.

Also, I will abstain from discussing yardages and pars.

Brad!

I like that better, I'm changing the title of this post from fox to rat and toilet plunger club right now.

Thanks,

Malcolm

Since I seem to have insomnia tonight I'll take us through to the marvelous ninth...

Hole 7 Tee, wind was really brutal this day from left to right

Timely post for me, Malcolm, as I'll be there in a few weeks.  I like the arse picture of the guy taking a cell phone call.  A GCA.com first, I believe.

One of my favorite all time courses - used to live 15 min down the road by another early 1900's gem.

Reminds me, has anyone seen / heard from Matt Burrows lately? Matt used to be a frequent participant here on GCA.

Had the opportunity to visit this course a few times with him when he was the 1st or 2nd assistant superintendent. Matt left there to go to NGLA and last I heard was over at Winged Foot (Director of Golf Courses).

Can you pleae move onto the 2nd 9, Malcolm?  I have a longest drive competion on the 15th and need to know whether to bring my power fade or slinging hook to the competition.

Phenomenal pictures, thanks for posting. It's been years since I've played it, but I had one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf there with friends...brings back fun memories!

ChipRoyce,

It seems that Matt is no longer in the golf industry:

More related to the topic at hand, this place looks wonderful.  I have never played the course, but I have always had a pronounced fascination with it; truly a great club/course that I hope to see some day.

They would really prefer to be addressed as "The Rat and Toilet Plunger Club" than be identified by their real name?

That seems a little short sighted of them.  ;)

Is that a good enough hint for you, Chris?

I have got to get back there someday.  It's been forever since I saw it.

It sure looks like some holes have benefited from active tree management whereas others need a chainsaw. Maybe it's my presbyopia. Regardless, a fantastic-looking place!

Rihc --

Bring them both. And don't forget the Claw (TM).

Best wishes with that long-drive contest. I know you've been hunting for some sort of glory, and I hope you win it, if only by the smallest margin -- say, an ångström.

That is an interesting presentation of design in that the bunkers are deep but flat bottomed Ipswich sand with steep humps and slopes, yet the bulk of the greens seem low to no profile even with the approach grade.  So, I can guess which course this is since the clues seem obvious.  Since the design-architect was a gamesman-sportsman who came to golf at a relatively later stage of life, and reportedly with no real training or understudy of any existing few golf architects of that era, he merely dropped white chips in areas he observed good players were landing their tee shots in order to dig yet new bunkers, combined with his vision of low profile green platforms, this is an interesting approach, in my view.  It certainly presents a unique vision of how the golf course should be arrayed.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I'll get the next nine up later today.

A couple of interesting items to note...

The club basks in it's historic element and take huge pride in the fact that the golf course has seen very few architectural changes since it's early years.

Despite that, in recent State Amateur Championships, Rat and Toilet Plunger scores slightly harder than a certain other well known course in the state that has hosted more recent Open Championships as well as the Ryder Cup.

That's interesting, at 6593 how does the course protect itself so well?

Pete,

Severely canted, fast greens and punishing fescue have an impact. The camera just can't do justice to the green complexes.

I'll get to the incoming nine but 12, 13 and 16 score the toughest.
