Coincidentally, US fans are encouraged to wear red on Sunday.

Brad's "hole by hole tour" of Medinah:

http://golfweek.com/news/2012/sep/26/ryder-cup-medinah-country-club-hole-hole/

With an overview on course maintenance:

"The intermediate bluegrass rough framing Medinah’s 27-30-yard-wide fairways will be cut at 1.25 inches for a width of 10 yards – on each side. That’s a generous buffer. Beyond that, the so-called primary rough will be only 2.5 inches deep – a lot lighter in thickness than Medinah’s members normally face and lighter than anything seen recently during the PGA Championship at Medinah in 1999 and 2006. The more-forgiving rough is supposed to favor the long-bombing, somewhat wilder U.S. team. Except that there’s no evidence on paper that the U.S. team is so much wilder that being in the more-moderate rough will help them any more than it will benefit the Europeans."

I got asked this question earlier today, and I've scoured the websites and can't find an answer.  Does anybody know when the shuttles start running from Arlington Park and the forest preserve to the south - particularly on Friday when the matches start?  I have friends who want to be there well before "balls in the air" but nobody (including myself) can figure out when the shuttles start running.  I'd love to be able to relay good info back to them....

Is this part of your answer? http://www.arlingtonpark.com/calendar/ryder-cup-parking-information

Nevermind.  I was stuck in a loop of crappy websites and gave up.  I did my own search, and found it about as fast as you did.  6 am is the answer.....

Dave:

Bus shuttle system worked like clockwork Wed. with big crowds. Well-organized, lots of busses, friendly helpful folks running it, and less than 30 minutes from Arlington to walking in the gate during weekday traffic. Well-done. Note -- the busses are on the far west side of the parking lot at Arlington, almost to the stables. The busses drop you at Lake Park HS across the road from the front entrance to the tourney -- it is a bit of a hike to get from the entrance to the action, and you have to get wanded for security, which takes a while.

Phil,

Did you see a will call window outside the front gate?

Howard:

Yes -- once you get into the main entrance (which is as wide as a football field!) head toward the far right side -- I believe that's the call window. Signs are quite clear; this is a really well-organized event, which it should be, as its the Ryder Cup, but the logistics are occasionally mind-boggling, and what I saw yesterday was pretty impressive.

(The main entrance -- really, the only one for spectators -- is near the northwest corner of the property, right across the street from Lake Park high school. Some guy apparently tried to sneak in off Medinah Rd. near the 17th hole -- didn't work. >:()

One more thing: There are of course RC programs for sale. But there is also a very good map of the course with details on tents and such handed out for free at booths marked as "information."

Phil,

Thanks for the background on logistics. Is there also a will call before the main entrance were tickets can be left and picked up before entering through the gates? Thx.

A few more programming notes based on my day (Wed.) at the Ryder Cup:

-- The practice ranges --one for US, one for Euro -- are on the "backside" of the clubhouse, using fairways from one of the other Medinah courses. Grandstands at each, and there is also a short-game practice area. You have to walk across one of the bridges that cross the lake's tributary to get to these.

-- Most players seem to be using the beautiful putting green that fronts the clubhouse for practice putting. It's likely to be jam-packed. In fact, the area in front of the clubhouse, near the putting green and the 1st tee, is one of the most congested on the course.

-- There are three bridges to cross the lake to get to the holes on the south side of the lake, which is most of the course: near the 1st green/2nd green, near the 13th tee/14th tee, and near the 17th tee/green. The first one -- near the 1st green/2nd green -- could be 10 yards wider and still not be wide enough; it was absolutely jam-packed yesterday morning (admittedly, in part because the first group of the day -- the Mickelson group -- was on the 1st green). If you want to get out to the main portion of the course quickly, I'd suggest finding your way to the 13th tee/14th tee bridge, or the 17th tee/green bridge on the far west edge of the property. (The bridges are also great spots for watching play on the par 3s nearby.) A course map is invaluable, if you're not familiar already with Medinah.

-- Happy to report that booze (and food :D) is plentiful and found throughout the grounds; as always, please drink responsibly. ;) Everything's overpriced, of course, but what'd you expect? It's the Ryder Cup.

Howard: I didn't check that window to see if that was a service available, so I'm not sure I can answer that (if you mean, can I walk up and leave a ticket for my buddy Joe who's coming later?). The area where you can mill around and wait for friends before you line up to go through security is really quite big, and lots of folks were standing around waiting for friends with tickets. Maybe call with your question and see if anyone answers? http://www.rydercup.com/usa/contact

I'll be shocked if anyone goes for it. Bubba Watson calls it an easy birdie from a layup. The green is too elevated for a runup if it's the slightest bit off line.

I've played the hole 40+ times....I've hit driver every time....I've hit it in the water twice.

These guys will and should hit driver..especially if the pin is in the front or in the back right...as if it's in the back right, the approach shot is harder than the drive.

From Medinah's website:

"Course #3, originally designed for Medinah’s ladies, was completed in 1928. That original Bendelow layout only lasted for three years. A major redesign took place in the early 1930’s."

This old thread adds some color as to what took place in 1932 when the course went through the major overhaul that lead to what we see today:

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,25124.0.html

What I can't understand is how a course that was initially designed as the "ladies course" morphed into the championship layout that it is today.  Is this just a mistake in the historical record?  Simply a massive miscalculation in the needs and wants of the club?  Was new land purchased that allowed for a "bigger" course?

"As much as we have learned about the history of golf architecture in the last ten plus years, I'm convinced we have only scratched the surface."  A GCA Poster
