Is a cock according to Luke Donald.

nb. The tweet has since been deleted by Mr Donald.

Well, just lost some respect for Luke Donald.  Gil's a pretty nice guy.

As an aside, this is another facet of why golf architecture is cool.  No other sports really have guys complaining about the design of their field, court, etc.

I'm betting his account was hacked or someone grabbed his phone as a prank.  I can't see Luke Donald saying something like that or finishing a comment with "Ha Ha...."

If he'd said Donald Trump was a cock half this site would be praising Luke Donald and having a big ole circle jerk.

Sad.  What a jerk Donald must be.

Dan,

whilst Luke Donald's statement might be completely off line at least he saw the error of his ways and deleted it.

One more thing Dan, I don't think that your comment about LD is any better than LD's about GH. Will you be deleting yours?????

Might he have been trying to tweet something different, and auto-correct somehow twisted it to "cock"?

Might he have meant something uniquely English (as in cock of the walk) to which we colonials are not privy?

Jon - you're kidding, right?  Personally, I think that PGA TOUR should fine him.

I didn't use vulgarity.

Dan,

vulgar maybe not but don't you think LD might find it offensive?

I am of course being somewhat toungue in cheek though, though at the same time making a point. Complaining about mudslingers by slinging mud. No offence meant ;)

I thought it was really funny - but that's the problem with social media - there are no facial expressions.

Let me use a story from my old days as a football official.

If a coach/players said "That call was the worst *#$&#( call I've ever seen"  -  no problem
If a coach/player said "You are the worst *#$&$#*#( I've ever seen" - 15 yards.

I don't have an issue with a player complaining about the design.  But denigrating the designer is out of bounds.

Dan,
I heard it like this:
Coach says to ref:  " If I call you are SOB are you throwing me out of the game?"  Ref to Coach:  "Yes"
Coach to Ref:  "Well if I just think you are SOB are you throwing me out of the game"  Ref to Coach: "No."
Coach to Ref:  " Well I think you are a SOB"

I seriously doubt that Gil is as worried about the statement as the people on here.  That is just part of the business....golf architects know that most of their peers diss them behind their backs and most of us that post on here know that sites like this consider us "unworthy" vs. the chosen.  And I think you just get used to it.  It is an extremely cut throat business....made that way by 5 signature guys not realizing they were being paid for marketing and not their design abilities.... ;)

Bingo. If he said it in an interview with a smile on his face it would be a totally different deal.

Donald is an articulate, intelligent and funny guy. My first impression (if I were to read such things) would be to laugh at his crude and simple and therefore what must be tongue-in-cheek attempt to pass blame for his finsih over to someone else.

Sad.  What a jerk Donald must be.

It probably wasn't the smartest thing to tweet. But Luke is the farthest thig from a jerk that there is. He a great guy and overwhelmingly generous.

Gil was just on the Golf Channel in the broadcast booth. As usual he handled all the questions with class and thoughtfulness.

Am I the only one who can see that he clearly meant to text or direct message this to one of his buddies and accidentally tweeted it instead? This is obvious to me because he accidentally tweeted a phone number directly before that which he also meant to send as a text message.

The guy screwed up. He has been the number one golfer in the world for a good part of the past year and there is no way he would be stupid enough to publicly call someone that. He is not the first celebrity to accidentally tweet something that he meant to send as a text. Twitter is mostly done through phones and I myself have tweeted something I meant to text before. This doesn't make him a bad person.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure I've texted that exact same thing about a certain architect to a friend before after getting a bad break on a golf course.

Not Surprised Gil would handle it with class.

Have heard Luke is a good guy, and it looks like this was accidentally made public.
Fact is, he still called Gil a Co&^.

I'm sure he'll apologize, just hope it's for the personal comment, not for the accidental airing of said comment.

Luke Donald explained that it was intended as a direct message (DM) and not for public consumption. He manned-up and apologized:

“I made a mistake, unfortunately. I made an error. I sent a message that was not meant to go out on Twitter, and I take full responsibility. I realized it immediately, tried to delete it and tried to move on. Unfortunately it got caught up there, and such is life. I didn't mean to put it out there, and I apologize to anyone I offended, especially Gil Hanse.”
