Are there any really good golf courses Private or public within 30 miles of Sacramento?

Granite Bay GC and Serrano CC (east of Sacto) are modern courses and are certainly worth a look. However, I cannot claim they are "really good golf courses."  

Kyle Phillips did a renovation of Del Paso CC, an old school course in Sacto, 5-10 years ago. I believe the course was recently awarded the 2015 US Senior Open.

I photographed Granite Bay a couple of months ago and it looks like a very pleasant stroll in the park. I believe Kyle Phillips was also involved with this course when he was with RTJ.

Yes, Granite Bay is a Kyle Phillips design. Mark Parsinen also had a hand in the creation of the club.

There is a remnant of a MacKenzie course there called Haggin Oaks...has one heck of golf shop too!

I liked the front 9 at Turkey Creek but the back 9 was a little tight for my swing

Granite Bay is a decent track. I know the pro and might be able to arrange a round w/ you. I'm pretty slammed w/ work and family though.

You may also want to check out Del Paso (private); Morgan Creek (public, but has gone downhill--still some good bones), Darkhorse (auburn, it's a haul from Sac), Winchester (very receptive pro who is a lurker here, minimum public play allowed). Also Rancho Murieta (Palmer Private) is an option if you can get a play.

All are tracks in the 6-7 scale, and pretty fun.

Ah, Turkey Creek and Catta Verdera are in the 5ish range, but still fun enough.

Haggin is convenient to downtown and has a pro shop like no where else in the country!

I played there a couple of times and I think the LPGA had a tournament there for a year or two.

Seven Bridges is the trainwreck of a course outside Chicago.  Damn I  hate that course.

I played Dark Horse in Auburn last year and found it very solid with a handful of very good holes. It's a difficult property and pretty much pure cartball, but it uses its elevation change to create some really fun shots and interesting holes. The price was right too.

Noooooo to Haggin except for the golf shop and snack bar. You can see the original Mac plans for the course in the snackbar and alot of Sacramento golf history on the tables under glass but that is as close as you get. The course is horrible.

If you have private access, Granite Bay is probably the best in town, but the renovated Del Paso is also very good and will host a future senior open. I love Rancho Murieta North course, they have two, and a fly in small plane airport. They used to have a Senior Tour event there, figure eight layout with no parrallel holes, plenty of old oaks and rolling hills.

As far as the publics go, if you don't mind driving about 45 minutes north there is beautiful course at the Cache Creek indian casino called Yoche De He that sits back of the casino in quiet valley with no visable roads or houses.

Ancil Hoffman is a pretty parkland muni course that is next to the American River and usually a few degrees cooler  and Mather is a former military course that is a muni now with plenty of trees and a rolling layout. Both are a bargain green fee wise.

Temperature is in the high 90's right now, but it's a dry heat.

Really good, no.

Granite Bay is OK, but I'd give the golf a Doak 5. The Parsinen/Phillips nerd attraction factor is certainly in play.

Darkhorse (Keith Foster) is OK and about the same level, but it's outside of the 30 mile radius.
