Vale Tom MacWood.

Goodness. That is sad news indeed. Much too young to have departed.

As a lurker I soon recognised Tom's contributions as very worthwhile and his passion for the history of the game and golf courses just wonderful. He will be missed. Condolences to his family.

Ran,

A short time ago Tom and I were corresponding about HH Barker and GCGC.

I think Tom indicated that HHB was the Club's 4th Head Pro.
He also cited the Pro's that preceded HHB.

I just put Tom in touch with the Club's historian so that they could share information on HHB.

You have to enjoy every day, especially with your family.

Sad news.  Would be greatly interested in seeing if folks have any favorite posts or threads from or about Tom that they could link to here.  Having just played Beverly recently, this one was poignant:

And a message from holidays past:

Copied below are a list of links to his In My Opinion pieces.  Whether fact or fiction, his words were always enlightening and entertaining.

Tom was a pillar of this website. To no longer have his contributions will be our loss, but that pales against the loss his family has suffered. I am deeply sorry to read this news.

This is terribly sad news, particularly for his family.

It seems like Tom was a very private man and despite reading many thousands of his posts, his articles and even received a few emails I knew nothing his private life, background or even his personal taste’s beyond a liking for Bob Marley. I’m a little shocked to hear he was the same age as me.  This is all a little ironic as he was intrigued by the bigger picture and seemed to believe we could best understand the work if we know more about the background.

Tom refused to believe the party line about the history of Golf course architecture. I was amazed about how much he knew about such tangential figures as Murray and Tippet, but he understood that their contributions were very important to courses like Portrush and Rye. The members of clubs prefer to associate themselves with the famous names and well worn stories. To me his greatest work was his essay on Crump. He showed that the history the Club had hidden, actually enhanced the man and his accomplishment.

Fifty four and so much more to give. He told me that he was working on a Colt timeline, which he said would be an enormous undertaking as it meant following Alison’s travels, Morrison, Murray etc. etc. etc.  I’m sure he had many such projects in the works and sadly these will now never see the light of day.

I would welcome personal reminiscences from those who knew him.  One question I wished I'd asked him, is how much,if at all, he had played in GB&I on courses he clearly loved from afar.

RIP Tom.
Let's make GCA grate again!

RIP Tom and my sincere condolences to his family.

I never met Tom but we exchanged hundreds of emails over the years - so many that I had to create a separate "MacWood" email folder for our correspondence. He was so generous with information and unselfishly helpful when I found myself with gca questions I couldn't answer. Our little corner of the golfing world has lost someone special.

If there is a Heaven, Tom will have already argued his way past St. Peter and be now sharing a bottle of single malt with George Crump and Hugh Wilson.

Thanks for your contribution.  Your commitment was inspiring.

I also didn't realise we were similar in age.

From this website alone, I held the impression that Tom owned a broader knowledge about the history of golf course architects than anyone else on the planet.  I hope that can be recognised suitably in time to come.

Terrible news and condolences to his friends and especially family.

Sad news...and quite a shock. Tom could thrust and parry with the best and his take was always worth a read, even if you didn't necessarily agree with him. He certainly spent an enormous amount of time trying to dig and find what historical golf evidence might yield. RIP Tom and know your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Respectfully,
Kris

I am not entirely comfortable writing about those that I never met, however I can say that Tom is one person I really would have liked to have met.

My thoughts are with his family.  Ran, please let us know if there is any meaningful support we can offer.

I offered my condolences yesterday but Ron Pritchard just asked if I would please mention on gca that it was such sad news, and he will keep Tom and his family in  his thoughts and  prayers. And ditto that again for me.

My prayers go out for Tom and his family. May he rest in peace.
It is too late to say thank you to him for all his time and effort given to us here,
But may his family know how many unknown or unmet friends he had.
