Jim -

Thanks for the pictures.  Fantastic!  I've never been to Pasa, but may be there this July.  Some say the playing corridors are very narrow.  Did you feel that way?

That bunkering is awesome.

Jim, the only tight corridors are 6 and 7, and trees were planted in between and left of 7 to separate the holes between the OB left of 6 and the entrance road.   The first fairway is wider than it looks.   Everywhere else there is lots of Mackenzian width.   enjoy, it's my favorite back nine in golf.

Jim,

I agree, the back nine does 'outshine' the front (in fact, I think the incoming holes are almost without flaw). But, again, I don't think Pasatiempo is a course that should be dissected hole by hole, front nine vs. back nine, etc... it's the entire experience of Pasatiempo, as a whole, that really counts.

It's a good one :)

+100 on the fairway striping...man that has really go to go.  Its beyond hideous.

Once again, those pictures re-inforce the brilliant use of land and its features, (outside of #7) which I'm no fan of either.

I love this course!  One of the best anywhere.  Especially the back nine--and especially 11 and 16.
The par 3 third hole is the longest 235 yards in golf--soft and extremely uphill.  You need to be very long to hit less than a driver.
I am not a fan of the 6th hole, but maybe that's because of the netting down the left side to protect the close-in houses.  And the green complex is not in keeping with the rest of the course.  I also don't much care for the eighth green--especially toward the back of it.  Too much slope.  I'll bet it was redone at some time.  Doesn't feel like Mackenzie.
But, all in all, a super course!  One of my favorites.

... but oh Lordy those fairway stripes are honking!

I'm not sure what all the fuss is, the mowing crews have to go in both directions regardless.

The whole course looks so much better with the trees gone, especially 16.

Wonder if the striping looks worse in pics than in real life (like cartpaths do).....

For some reason, the striping looks more dominant in my pictures than from what I remember on the course itself. Perhaps it's because the camera is focused on a narrow field of view and is not taking in the surroundings. It certainly did not detract from our experience, in any way.
Big and bold. Simply put, those words best describe Pasatiempo for us. Wouldn't hesitate to play it again if we're ever back in the area.

Jim, what did you think of Sandpiper and will you post some pictures from there?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Tim, the day after Pasatiempo, we golfed at San Juan Oaks (see other thread) and then left Monterey and drove down the coast to visit our son in L.A., stopping along the way to golf at Monarch Dunes (will be posted next) and Sandpiper (will post after Monarch Dunes). I'll try to post within the next day or so.

I checked with Paul Chojnacky, our superintendent at Pasatiempo.  According to Paul, it looks like Jim caught us in the midst of having mowed this particular pattern since March 15th and the stripes were "more than burnt in."  We've been waiting for the new mowers to switch directions.  However, not having the new mowers until the first of June, we actually went back to the half and half pattern earlier this week.  Although our members and the public tend to like the bright stripes, we want to alter the mowing lines more often to not have them "so" burnt in and dramatic.  Paul believes that it create better turf on the fairways anyway as the grass tends to lay down in the particular pattern if burning lines in.  Switching the directions more often will prevent the grass from laying down and give us a better cut.
