Mowing patterns and course firmness
« on: May 17, 2012, 08:16:24 PM »
There are two courses in my area that have replaced their fairway turf with bent grass and the playing surfaces are very different.  I was wondering if any of this is attributable to the mowing patterns used.  One mows up and back while the other uses a criss cross pattern. The first course seems to be much firmer and faster than the latter? Is this a factor of watering or mowing?

Jerry,

firmness is mainly to do with the type of ground (how sandy) and the amount of water used though the type of grass will have an effect on the latter. Mowing patterns are mainly a case of the look wanted though the straight up and down method is much quicker than criss cross.
