Anyone have a course that comfortable old feelings take over and you just let go and consequently play great?
(Regardless of how much you've been struggling ::) ::))
Does this make these great courses?

ANGC would seem to be one for the pros

For me?
Augusta CC
Goat Hill
NGLA
Southampton

Palmetto is one I wish fell into this category(one of my favorites and very old school), but I rarely ever play well there
(although it just could be a time of year thing)

Boston Golf Club brings out my A game.  On the other hand, I can NEVER play well at Stonewall.

Skokie CC... I'm not sure I've ever shot over 77 there in maybe 10 plays. No idea why.

Jeff,

That's an interesting question.

There are certain courses I seem to play well no matter how poorly I'm playing, but there are course I tend to play poorly no matter how well I'm playing.

Like you, NGLA seems to bring out the best in me.

Trump WPB tends to have the opposite effect

There are other courses that fit into those categories and I should probably chart them and try to figure out the reasons behind my performance

Jeff,

My two best rounds of the last 12 months are from Palmetto.  Birdied two holes I've never birdied with you last week.  ;D

I remember embarrassing myself at Olympic Club and also any other course that requires the ball to be turned over right to left.  There is something about having to execute a shot you don't have based on the constraints of a corridor.  For some reason, open style courses (like Ballyneal or Longshadow) that require the same shot doesn't seem as daunting as a place constrained by trees.

It's because Tobacco Road is easy.  That place is a great confidence boost.

I actually kinda like Lake Michigan Hills. Its not something I'd send anyone for GCA marvelling and its rather overtreed, but I've seen far worse!

I don't think I have any courses that apply to this question. Maybe Blackthorn in South Bend. I've played well at Black Mesa more often than not, but my last round there broke that string.

You all realize you are jinxing yourself by naming courses on this thread? I'd be much more likely to find places that always eat me for lunch like Paa-Ko!

Fossil Trace.

Played it three times and never shot worse than 75. I fluctuate between a four and a five.

Oddly enough my best round there (72) was a couple years ago on Thanksgiving weekend; I hadn't played in about three months. Birdied all three par 3s on the back nine.

TOC

In my four games I don't think my score has approached 80 - by far my best scoring on championship course.  That said, I think TOC is the easiest of the Open rota and easier than one hell of a lot of other links.

Fossil Trace.

I don't know if it's a case of horses-for-courses, but every Engh I ever played had this effect on me.
When I lived in Colorado, I used to turn to Redhawk Ridge any time I needed a lift.  Fossil Trace was that way, too.  Same for Redlands Mesa.  I can't say they were my absolute 'favorites', but something about them definitely soothed my game.

The Ocean Course, suprisingly.

Learnings:
-- Play the appropriate tees (Dye)
-- Listen to everything caddie Mark Bloomer says and attempt to replicate
-- Grab a tee time in the early morning when wind is minimal
-- Don't go long on #3
-- Avoid the alligator in #4 fairway

I am with Howard and The Ocean Course always brings out the best in me. I've never played in the mornings there when the wind is low, but I have managed to not shoot higher than 76 in about 10 plays from the championship tees(6700 and change). I think the wind just makes me concentrate that extra little bit so no small shot is over looked.

Camargo is another one that I always play well at. The wide fairways and big greens just give that extra little bit of confidence to pull off the more aggressive shots rather than playing it safe

While playing well is relative, particularly in my case, each time I've played Skokie and Olympia Fields North I've done surprisingly well.

Almost anywhere I play in the UK, North Berwick and the Old Course for sure.   I guess I get more fired up over there.
