Among those who are within striking distance as the leaders tee off on Saturday?

We have the Senior in Freddie, the underperformer in Sergio, the chubby journeyman in Dufner, the best who hasn't won a major in Westwood and a smattering of very capable others. Even without Tiger, there are plenty of good storylines. Which would be the most resonant and why?

Dufner

edit: oops, forgot the reason why - least 'known' player. Most of the other guys have had more time in the sun than him.

Dufner, because it would be above him.

WEstwood, because it is time for him.

Couples, because we old guys love him.

Kuchar, because it is him.

Any first time winner.

I suppose Westwood because of that "best player without" tag that tends to dog players for years.

Above him? He's got a couple of wins and came in 2nd in the last major. Every winner has to win some time...

He won twice in 123 starts on the Nationwide Tour, no wins in the big show.  Everyone else in the top tier, -3 or more, has won a PGA tour event or a major save for Hanson, and he's won 4 times on the Euro tour.

I thought Sergio, for the same reason.  Sergio is young enough that if he could get the monkey off his back of not being a good finisher on Sunday, he has time to win more.  Not that I expect him to.

Bubba, so he can drive the General Lee up Magnolia Drice :D.   Seriously, Jason Dufner or Sean O'Hair amongst those in the top 10. Don't think the Swedes (Hanson, Stenson) would be transformed by anything.

When you use the phrase "transform his life" it would have to be Dufner. A win would elevate his name to the top of the new young guns.

But a win by Freddy would go a long way to put his name with the all-time greats.

Mickelson - A 4th Masters would put him up there with the big boys and it could also be the spark that inspired him to world #1 in the year that it is all supposed to be about Tiger's comeback.

Agree that it would be Duffner but he's hardly a young gun at age 35. He's a journeyman, toiling on the Nationwide Tour until earning his card in 2007.

Tim -

Above him = completely unexpected given his record.  That's all.  On those greens...

He certainly has the skills for it but it would have been a major "Major" surprise.

From 1991 through 2011 the winner came from the final pairing 19 out of 21 times, exceptions being Johnson in '07 and Schwartzel in '11.

Zach was 2 shots back of the lead and tied for 4th place while Schwartzel was 4 back and tied for second.

If history repeats itself the winner will most likely be Mickelson or Hanson, and even if someone as far back as 4 shots (like Schwartzel in '11) prevails it narrows the field of the potentially transformed to 5 players;  the final pairing, Oosthuizen (2 back), Watson (3 back), and Kuchar (4 back).

I gotta believe that the caterpillar/butterfly of this group would be Hanson, a relative unknown in the USA.

Sergio - Finally fullfilling the promise he showed a decade+ ago.

Bubba - The guy has unbelievable physical skills but is a little bit mental.  He's young.  If he wins the Masters it could catapult him to many more wins and multiple majors.

I think Oosthasen ( might learn to spell his name). He goes from a one time major winner with a great swing to having won at Augusta and St Andrews at a you g age and probably winning multiple future majors. However,if a few get away you never know.So it may be the start of an all time great but in this day and age that greatness needs a break or two as deep as golf is. The fine line would make me a head case.

The obvious answer is "Tiger".

Oh wait, I forgot you limited this to people reasonably close to the lead...
