The clubhouse at Gold Mountain, Graeagle, CA.   Originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Nakoma Country Club in Madison, WI in 1925, but never built until recently in California.

Agreed!

There is something so unique about the modular design of the Honorable Company's clubhouse that is at once warm and welcoming while still slightly foreboding.  It seems to perfectly represent the type of traditional, no nonsense club that they are.

I've never even been inside the damn place, yet I can't imagine a better place to soak up the golfing atmosphere.

CRUDEN BAY: absolutely love the view from the grill...Dracula's castle in the distance...Awesome!

SHINNECOCK: nothing like hanging out on the back porch, drinking a cold beer, watching the sun set, and hearing the squeeking of the screen door (a la "The Waltons")...you could almost hook up the clubhouse to a tow truck and haul off with it...

MAIDSTONE: Oh! The babes hanging out by the pool....need I say more.

WINGED FOOT: Love the stone clubhouse that's just pure golf...right in the middle of two fabulous courses...great grill to relive the round.

They are all great for different reasons...

The clubhouse at Royal Sydney reeks of class, affluence, and old world charm, helped by its retention of much of the old
wood panelling. To boot, it is huge: no-one need ever worry about suffering claustrophobia inside. Stuffy? Yes, but the 'Old' boys would have it no other way.

I think Sleepy Hollow's clubhouse was the former residence of one of the Vanderbilts or Astors or some mega American family of an earlier age!

Ostentatious: Ranks way up there.
Big: Parts of the 'house' are still reserved for the former family members--and you would notice.
Overpowering: Many people think the clubhouse is the best part of this TPC course!

Some different, yet equal shacks:

Roaring Fork Club, Basalt, Colo.

A beautifully appointed, all wooden log Structure with perfectly situated and large porch over the 18th hole. Try Grizzly Adams meets Martha Stewart (and not at San Quentin)

Oakmont

A wonderfully aged and weathered exercise in Green and white that offers panoramic views of the slickest turf known to man. And to think they wanted to rip that up and pour concrete to save on maintence.

Sherwood, Thousand Oaks, Ca.

Can anyone say "too much." It is beautiful but overwhelming and seems better suited to some Hawaiian plantation. RTJ in Manassas is along the same vine!

I was hoping that some of you would be able to give specifics as to why these clubs are so good. I am unable to play and visit some of these classic clubs so could you please elaborate on the reasons why you consider the clubhouses so good. Is it atmospere, architecture, food, comfort, lockers, etc.

The key to a great Golf Club House is scale and size. The smaller and cozier you can make it, the better. The Honors Course in Tennessee is a perfect example of what I am talking about. Too many clubhouses are designed around the big event.

TEP is correct Sleepy Hollow was the former home of one of the Vanderbilts(istwas a wedding gift) which the bride never quite liked and never lived in.

I always wonder why it is so important for the membership to maintain the original architectural integrity and interior design of this 1893 Stanford White structure(at great expense) yet not as important to maintain the architectural integrity of the cb mcdonald-tillie golf course. :(

Yeah, Vanderbilts and obviously that describes my taste for size and grandeur.  I haven't seen the course in years but it seems that it was in good shape then?

I like a large building that has smaller cozy rooms tucked away.

What do you mean by the architectural integrity of the MacD/Raynor golf course?

Do you know that a few of the holes and parts of some were incorporated into the Flynn Shinnecock (at least two whole holes and parts of a few others like green site (that were altered by Flynn)) or are you talking about the holes to the right of the drive (Tuckahoe) that have been partially recovered! The remainder of the MacD/Raynor course is gone now (to rte 27, maintenance buildings and other things).

Shadow Creek had probably the best I've seen. Understated elegance, french windows, huge locker room and  picture windows looking out of the bar, as big as they get.

Adios had the coolest locker room, but as I recall the bar and seating areas were'nt up to the cathedral like locker room.

Tom-my second paragraph is referring to Sleepy Hollow not Shinnecock.  The clubhouses I guess are both Stanford White structures but remarkably different.  Stanford White for most prolific, versatile architect of his day?

ADIOS!

Probably the most efficient use of clubhouse space I have ever seen. The lower level consists of the Pro Shop and cart storage. The upper level features a grill room with a vaulted ceiling overlooking the course.  The workout area also overlooks the course. The remained of the upper level consists of the locker room and a large bar and lounge area. The middle level of this split level building houses the offices. Since this is a men only club there is no space wasted on a locker room or lounge for women. ;D

Two old fashioned understated club-houses by the same architect, George Washington Smith, Cypress Point and The Valley Club of Montecito.

Sitting on the back patio of CP with a gin and tonic in hand, looking down to the 16th green is one of the great sights in golf.

The Valley Club building is just plain beautiful.

Pheasants and peacocks can be distracting to golfers! Have you heard the noise those things make when they start getting vocal?

If you can hit a shot through that noise--you got concentration!

But knowing someone like Steve Wynn and his attention to detail he probably has them on the perfect dose of valium at all times!

Applebrook has done a real nice job on their Clubhouse.  

While it is new one would think it was an old Pennsylvania Style Farmhouse that was simply restored. Kudos to Hank Belboar.

Well guys if you haven't been able to see the clubhouse at Bulls Bay Golf Club, I think you would have to put it right up there with the best of the best. It is perched 100 feet above sea level, over looking the Isle of Palms, Dewees Island, Capers Island, Bulls Island, the intercoastal waterway and fourteen of the golf holes. This place will take your breath away. The clubhouse will open sometime in April. Mike Strantz has truely out done himself.

I've always liked old clubhouses so I tried to find the most historic clubhouse, or at least some of the oldest (with little known courses, in the main):

Woodsome Hall main structure built in 1517, although some dwellers there since 1089:



Clubhouse at Chislehurst, 1717


Rotherham, the estate goes way back to before 1066, althoug the clubhouse is from 1814.



This one a Farnham isn't very grand, but does goes back to the 1700s and looks like a fine country pub!



Effingham from 1770, but with a fireplace made from ship limbs from the Spanish Armada.



Kings Norton, not sure how old this one is but it's pretty impressive!
