Best Clubhouse in Golf

I thought I would throw this one out and see if anyone had any feedback.

Here is the best one in my opinion:

Shinnecock

I think the first is nearly the best.  I cast my vote for The Country Club in Brookline.  Elegant and grand, just like the club.

I'm still partial to Gulph Mills near Philadelphia. It's nearly my ideal. Not to big, not to small. Perfectly understated, yet elegant in its simplicity.

We also a few attractive clubhouses up here in Canada that fit the same billing: Redtail, Essex, St. George's and Toronto Golf Club, to name four in the province of Ontario.

Stoke Poges

Not understated at all  :D

Some great buildings next to the course there too, including one where King Charles was held prisoner in 1640s.

Guys
From a UK point of view :

I really liked Royal StGeorges Clubhouse , Old, Atmospheric , Memorabilia , and plenty of Senior Gentlemen willing to trade stories of the golden days for a whisky  . I loved the fact , that one gentleman after telling me several stories said  " But in all my 83 years I have never seen anything like John Daly , You know he drove the 5th " !

But for me , my Fav. would be the new clubhouse at Cruden Bay . I just never tire of that veiw , or the  wonderful unpretentious menu . (the Smoked Haddock Bake is recommended )

Most overated : Turnberry's Clubhouse , the opposite of Cruden Bay , Pretentious !

And while we are 'off topic' , Best Halfway Hut - Royal Cinq Ports .

Best Regards
Lester

Lester:  I gather you live in the UK?  I ask this because I found the new clubhouse at Cruden Bay to be functional but cold, sterile, and wholly lacking the charm of the old clubhouse there... Of course it is better in every functional way... but the old one had the same view and was just so much more what I was seeking, as an American going over there.  The new one could just as well have been in California....

I suppose if I were a Cruden Bay member, though, I'd be all for the new one - it just has so much "more".  But darn the old one had charm....

The US equivalent of this is the halfway house at Monterey Peninsula CC - Dunes course.  The old one there was a funky old log cabin-type thing that just oozed "charm"... they have a new one that's bigger, has a great view... but is sterile and wholly lacking in charm.  Oh well.  Such is progress.

I'm in a little bit of a weird mood at the moment so today I would have to pick Garden City Golf Club!

You could certainly call it "understated"! You could probably call it almost anything, except "grand"!

But there's no doubt about it--whatever you think of it or whatever you call it, when you stand on the 18th tee and look at it, it DOES get your attention somehow!!

But seriously, I might have to pick NGLA's clubhouse from certain vantages like the 17th tee. Ever notice the line of the peak of the roof? I've never seen that before this side of the Cotswold Mountains!

Seattle Golf Club!  Great views of Puget Sound.  Tudor Style building built around turn of last century.  Mens lockerroom is high ceilinged and is as understated and yet elegant as they come.  Add pictures of visiting presidents beginning with Taft and great players including Jones and you have history, taste, and class.  (Not all that common in Seattle)

Winged Foot and Aronimink, the architecture of the buildings is in the same league as their golf courses.

Best patios, lunch at Merion and dinner at Winged Foot, both classic golf experiences and close to major metropolitan de-tox centers. ;D

Lochgelly in Fife.  Warm.  Friendly.  Good rib-sticking food.  Cheap beer.  No pretension.  Priceless.

I have never been to this club, so my vote is based solely on pictures.  My vote:

Newport Country Club, RI

Shinnecock, by a large margin-- Designed by the best and perfectly situated to capture the views of the course "from every room" as they say.  It also perfecty frames holes which are played toward the clubhouse. Even in the restroom there are highlights where letters from the ledgends of golf are posted everywhere(and I mean everywhere).

Best midweek lunch.  NGLA.  Lobsters, fresh corn, chicken pie--can not beat that.

Best evening cocktail-- Tie-- (a)Sunset at Spanish Bay with the bagpipes and (b)on the patio at Baltusrol watching the snow geese land and viewing the skyline of NY in the distance.

Ed Baker;

You take me for lunch at Merion and dinner at Winged Foot and then I'll take you for lunch at Winged Foot and dinner at Merion and then we can both go together and have dessert at some nearby major metropolitoan de-tox center after which we can take each other for a drive to look at some really good golf architecture by moonlight!

Dennis Harwood:

One of the greatest experiences in life is to be able to sit on the toilet and look out the window at some really world class architecture!

Does Shinnecock have that?

TE--

I can tell this thread is rapidly crumbling into absurdity-- and probably doesn't belong here(and to boot I regret extending it)--

I do have a friend who designed his home in such a fashion so that he can sit(at the place you suggest) and watch golfers play a classic par three (with water) just below him-- I understand it gives him hours of pleasure--personally I would rather be playing the hole!

Dennis:

Sorry--I don't want to see this thread crumble into absurdity so I'll sit up straight and get serious!

I'll seriously suggest another neat clubhouse that I suggested when this topic appeared on here about six months ago!

Bidermann Golf Club, Wilmington, Delaware!!

The only clubhouse that Gulph Mills members are actually jealous of for out-understating GMGC's clubhouse!

I certainly don't want to be absurd but something about Shinnecock's clubhouse really did make me laugh. It was pretty darned cold out there yesterday and the wind was howling about 30 miles per hour so at one point I asked one of the members with us if they didn't have one helluva heating bill for that clubhouse!

He looked at me and smiled and said; "Not at all, haven't you noticed it's about as cold in here as it is outside?"

Perhaps not the best, but certainly unique is Medinah with its Moorish influence and grandeur.  There are certainly elements to it that I have seen no where else...

One of the great non-playing experiences in golf is sitting on the outdoor terrace at Merion, having lunch and critiquing the golfers hitting off on One.  Almost as great as teeing off on One, with people eating lunch about 15 feet behind you!

Need categories for this one, methinks.  Best view, most atmosphere, best locker room, etc.

Best food is a questionable aspect of architecture and setting, but since BAD food is a sure turn-off, I guess we can include cuisine, too.

Suggestions?

Jim H--Ever played the first at Capilano in Vancouver?

The first tee(with the hole facing toward downtown Vancouver and the harbor, which is  perhaps one of the most spectacular drives on a first hole in all of golf) is hit less than 10 feet from the open window in the mens bar(with those standing at the bar watching and the bartender with his back to you ; so you can order an ale to go as you hit), and you must ask those on the putting green ahead of you to stand aside --
