Hats off to Charlie Rymer

for discussing the connection between TOC and ANGC. The comparisons to the 4th green and 11 as well as 5 to 17 were great for golf architecture.

I saw this too and was gonna post it, but you got there first.

I figured someone on this forum would see it and get excited :)

He did a great job.
I was surprised to see it, I took a double take,  had to replay it to make sure.
I think it was longer then 30 seconds. Charlie is pushing the envelope.

I applaud Charley for trying to create interest in architecture, but in reality, it was hard to see similarities and Augusta has been changed so much from Jones and Mackenzie's original architecture.

Nice to see that kind of segment but the 5/17 comparison struck me as a bit odd. I can't recall ever seeing that before. And really, it comes down to a false front and not wanting to miss the green? Well, OK.

Would it be a better description to say that the 5th may have been influenced by 17 at TOC, as opposed to a copy?

As a Georgia Bulldawg, the only thing I'll be taking off for Charlie will be the lid of a big tub of chocolate and peanut butter ice cream.

Go Dawgs!

Jason, have you heard Charlie's story about the UGA students and the game of 20 questions?   ;D ;D

Although the similarities when dispalyed were few and far between, I do applaud Charlie for trying to include some architecture into the show.
I am sure most did not any worthy comparisons, but 100% for effort...

Charlie wasn't making up the hole comparisons. MacK and Jones made the comparisons back in the day.

Whether you agree with them or not, full points for devoting a segment of GC to talk about them.

Every journey starts with a first step....   Kudos to Charlie.

This article, written by Dr. MacKenzie, lays out the influences discussed by Charlie:

THE ORIGINAL THINKING OF MAC AND JONES:

No. 13—Regular Distance 160 Yards           EDEN
—Championship 170.
This hole is very similar to the famous eleventh (Eden) at St. Andrews. There have been scores of attempted copies of this famous hole, but there is none that has the charm and thrill of the original. Most copies are failures because of the absence of the subtle and severe slopes which create the excitement of the original hole, and also because the turf is usually so soft that any kind of a sloppy pitch will stop. Previous failures, followed by, comparatively speaking, increasing successes may have given us sufficient experience to warrant us in hoping that here at last we may construct a hole that will compare favorably with the original.

No. 14—Regular Distance 445 Yards            ROAD
—Championship 470.
This will be a similar type of hole to the famous seventeenth, the Road Hole at St. Andrews. A group of trees will form a corner of the dog-leg instead of the station master's garden, and the green itself will be situated on a plateau similar to its prototype.
No. 15—Regular Distance 18

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.
