The golf geologist Robert Price describes it in great detail in his book Scotland's Golf Courses .  It was his enthusiasm that compelled me to see and play the course.  No disappointment there but, as mentioned, hardhats would not be superfluous.  I found myself feeling a bit like a vole under circling hawks.  Impending doom. But, of course, no disasters but what really made me nervous was the worry that I'd thump somebody else with a wayward shot and be bannished from the town before I could get my skink.
The town is a charming old burg that sits below one of the most magnificent viaducts you may ever see. Nice pub in town as well.      "Slainte"

I super agree with Benny Hillards Hole discriptions. My notes are pretty much the same.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to play Cullen, but the visit was worth while. Walking it during a tournament wasn't a very good idea. It is super dangerous... maybe go for the hardhat... The old guy working in the office couldn't tell what the original routing and the original holes from Old Tom were, but that might have been his incredible Scottish accent.

With the routing on the back of the Scorecard it was a nice puzzle. Does anyone really know which ones are the original OT holes?

I have plenty of pictures and would love to share, but I have no idea how to upload them... *girls and computerstuff* I should be blushing, because I'm kind of a computer nerd...

Bogey

I've played it a couple of times including shooting a 67 (par 62 ?) where I had to chip and putt like Seve. Just played Painswick this weekend and I'd say that Cullen is the only course I can think of that could put Painswick in the shade for quirk. Its by no means all great golf with a couple of blander holes up top but two par 3's in a row hitting over sea stacks, followed by another where you have to squeeze it round the stack with a long iron or wood makes great fun golf for me.

If you take it for what it is, you'll have a hoot. If you're of a more par 72, four par 3's, four par 5's etc kind of mindset then you'll probably want to go and play the championship courses at Aberdeen or East Lothian or Ayrshire. Moray on the other hand has a fantastic selection of courses that aren't necessarily great courses but do offer some great golf. Anyone coming this way, let me know and I'll happily point you in the right direction.

Garland

The 15th tee is actually behind the 14th green and the 8th tee is built into the hillside to the left, so not quite as dangerous as it may seem, although all things are relative !

Bogey:

Sadly, this is an area often overlooked by visitors to Scotland, and esp. of the golfing set from the States, who view the northern Scottish holy grails soley in terms of Dornoch and Cruden Bay and rarely bother to look for anything in between. Lossiemouth Old and New are not too far down the road to the west (although the pace of traveling on these roads is leisurely), and Elgin is a short 10-minute trip south of Lossiemouth with a fine inland course. The community of Buckie along the way offers two modest courses (Buckpool and Strathlene), while the twin ports of Banff and MacDuff offer an 18-hole Mackenzie (Duff House Royal) and Royal Tarlair, home of the famous par 3 13th hole "Clivet," where if you hit it long, your relief is somewhere on the Shetland Islands.

Phil

Many thanks for banging the drum for golf in this area. I started working up in Elgin just over two years ago and have managed to play all the courses in Moray, bar Dufftown and Rothes, on several occasions as well as several that are just "over the border" in Aberdeenshire and Highlands and the range and quality of golf is fantastic.

I just wish Sean Arble could do a tour of the area to capture it for Golfclubatlas.

There should be some kind of rule precluding the posting of the videos from the NLU guys on this site. I've just spent/wasted?/thoroughly enjoyed! spending the past two hours watching 4 videos, including the Cullen video, when I should be preparing an Amended Complaint. . . The internet, and "working" at home, can be dangerous
