Kris , all the best to you. I'm going to take out my old MacGregor Eye o Matic and say a prayer for your driving!
A quick story. Nelson (Nellie) Dane was a local member at PVGC who I caddied for more than a few times when I started there. He was a decent player (7 handicap) ) who thought he should be able to break 80 with some good course management . A nice guy , easy to caddy for. His level of frustration grew one spring into summer as he just couldn't finish off a round there. A bunch of mid to high eighties scores.
One day he striped tee shots on one and two and made real nice pars. This continued past three, four and the dreaded #5, where he hit three wood on and made it for birdie. Uh oh! I'm looping with a wonderful grizzled veteran nicknamed Cappy , and we were out front forecaddying on seven. We both marveled at his ball striking that day! Despite this , Cappy looked at me when he whipped his drive almost to "the acre" and said , nah, can't last. I replied , you gotta believe!
"Nellie" parred seven , hit a beautiful flip wedge off the hanging lie on #8 , and headed to nine tee one under. Cappy looked at me knowingly as he hit another big tee shot on nine and muttered that the second shot matters too. He wasn't rooting against him, but was a non believer.
As we walked jauntily to up the hill to the ninth green, I was careful not to say anything about the fact he had a fifteen footer for 33, two under par.
I wasn't going to "jinx him" !
He eyed up his putt, running straight down the spine on the left green, and asked me for a read. Mumbling quietly , I suggested he lag it and give it some extra break to mitigate the downhill. Just then he lost the magic, why we will never know. He stabbed the putt, sending it down the hill too fast and off the front edge. In a moment of golf horror , he shanked the ensuing chip into the bunker, and proceeded to butcher the hole and the front nine. Needless to say he didn't break 80 that day.
I remember feeling awful for him, and perhaps my empathy was noticed by the "golf gods" . Right after that I broke 70 for the first time , with an improbable number of long birdie putts . Nothing but good karma followed.
Kris , I'll repent and play on, thanks for the support!
