who I am...
« on: February 15, 2012, 08:58:14 AM »
Hi GCA,

my name is Angela Moser, I'm a 26 year old (female) German Landscape Architect spezialising on Golf Course Design. My parents don't play golf, so I started to play golf through a sumer programme of my hometown when I was nine years old. I played on a tournament level and still contribute my skills for the women's team of my homeclub (we don't have college teams) from time to time. Falling in love with the landscapes and different hole strategies, I was studying at the University of applied Science Weihenstephan, Munich with having a scholarship for the University of Sheffield, England where I was able to study some of Englands and Scottish' greatest golf courses. 2009 I was working for the Greenkeeper crew at Golfclub Munich-Eichenried, host of the European Tour's BMW Open. While finishing my diploma thesis entitled "Plants on Golf Courses - Recommendation for South-Eastern Europe", I was working in an Austrian Golf Design office. After working for them for one year I needed to get out of the office, back into the nature onto sites and building golf courses. So, I was working for a german GC construction company on a 9H project in Munich. I was very lucky to get in touch with Renaissance Golf Design and Tom Doak, who invited me to work as an internee in the field at the Renaissance Club at Archerfield, Scotland last summer. That's when I heard about it the first time and got addicted to GCA.

Although having some office skills, I decided to set up myself as an independent shaper on sites. I so much enjoyed working on heavy equipment and hope to continue shortly...

Well, that's my story...

PS: If you are interested in more information you could check out my homepage www.moser-landscaping.com, which I'm about to update the next couple of weeks. It's getting way bigger with lots of new stuff.

Wilkommen.

Has your opinion about plants on golf courses changed, after meeting the team from Renascence and finding gca.com?

Welcome, hope you enjoy the interaction.

There are so many subjects relating to the current thinking re GCA that needs to be re-examined, to the point that the selection process must be placed high up the clients agenda. Sustainability of the course should I believe also be of paramount importance. But that’s for another day as with many other related subjects.

Angela,

Welcome aboard.  What was the most surprising thing about working with the crew at Renaissance?

Welcome, don't be shy about expressing your opinions!

I like the look of your site. What hole is that on your home page?

thank you everyone...

ufff... a lot of questions here, but I try to answere:

Adam: My thesis tries to explain why and where you shouldn't use and especially plant trees on the golf course (in terms of destryoing strategic lines - too many green committees did that before) and which species would work with extraordinary spots. for example: solo trees which split fairways (don't use flat rooting trees --> they'll fight with the turf). It is always a question about what is there naturally, what you are able to save in terms of clearing(hopefully you find an awesome routing to save all or most of the nature) and how can I improve the course.
Meeting and working with RGD and reading on GCA just proofed my oppinion. It is the same with contour lines and how some designers try to use what is given.

Jud: The most suprisingley at Renaissance was that I wasn't just hand raking all day, which I did on some other projects.

George: It is the 1st at Hillside GC, England

Ian: I know, as we all are. I don't know where Tom wants me to go, but I've time and would love to continue working with RGD.

Welcome, Angela!  You've won me over already by responding to Ian's "they're crazy" with "we all are"!  That belief-system should keep you sane and healthy for a long time to come :)

All the best. Please don't be shy with tossing out ideas.

Welcome Angela! Glad to see a friendly face here.

I snapped this picture of Doak's interns (and Sims) at Bandon last fall. I couldn't help but think I was sitting around the table with the future of golf (and Sims). :)

Hi, Angela (pronounced AHNG-guh-luh?) --

Good to see a woman in the business.

I'm the father of a very good female golfer -- now a college player -- and have noticed, while watching her play, that it appears women were the very last concern of many golf course architects, from tee to green.

The "women's tees," particularly, are very often placed at angles that completely change (and not for the better) the character of the hole.

Can't help but think that design crews that include women will keep a better eye on a course's playing characteristics for women.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

ha ha ha... Jim why are excluding Ben that often? I already noticed at Bandon that you guys can't get along with each other...  ;) Well, thank you very much that you posted a picture of me. I actually tried not to... but since you wrote such kind words - thank you - it feels not that bad.

Dan: It is pronounced Angela... ?!
First of all - congratulations for such a successful daughter. Yes, you are right. Women tee placement is not the strongest talent of this industry, but it is getting so much better. Best example are the proposals for the 2016 Games in Rio... Jack paired with Annika, ...

Angela,
Someone from the distaff side! Welcome to this world!  Having a woman's perspective on the course whilst creating the architecture could well provide the leading architects with new insights. Exciting times for you and a rather good addition to your C.V. having Renaissance Golf Design in there.

"..........and got addicted to GCA."   Well, yes, it is a drug but a very good one, I think, for anyone embarking on this sort of career.

Orra best,

Colin

Welcome, I have relatives in Wurzberg and Dortmund but have yet to play golf in Germany. One of these days when I visit the relatives maybe you can recommend some courses there to play.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Welcome Angela.

How would you describe your depth of knowledge of turf grass; grow-in issues, species and cultivar growth characteristics, and maintenance programs?  Have you worked or interned on the turf grass maintenance side?

We all hope that economies get stronger and work becomes available sometime soon for those who can endure the depressed economic times we have.

Your website certainly approaches the challenges of a GC Architect's future with 'enthusiastic' presentations of your services and experiences.

Good luck.

Colin: a 9H project is a 9Hole project

Joel: as I mentioned before - I just set up my new page and you are right, this doesn't fit very well. But I'm glad someone reads my homepage that carefully. Working there helped me improving my spanish though, which can be very helpful when working with on golf sites ;)

RJ: I was working on a greenkeeper crew for half a year and we had some turf courses at University, but I wouldn't say that I'm a professional in turf knowledge. A lot of it comes through further reading like the USGA Turf Management for GCs...
