My Committee have just suggested a fountain in the lake!!!
« on: February 15, 2012, 04:28:59 AM »
Its our 10th anniversary and a nice fountain in the lake on the 10th has been suggested. I was wondering if I killed the committee members would the judge understand and let me off.

I presume the club will change its name from Golf Club to Theme Park being the more appropriate place for such things, well in these islands anyway.

Adrian, remind the committee that they have a duty of care to protect the golf club for future generations. So invest the money wisely back into golfing facilities that will help achieve their duty of care would be my recommendation. Failure to protect the game could result in castration as clearly they have no use for them being that weak to consider such irrelevant items that are totally divorced from game of golf.

Adrian

The problem is not the fountain but the lake.

I am not a fan of fountains, but really a fountain does not affect the way a hole plays, does it? The only use for a fountain I know of, is to repell mosquitos in summer time if the water is not connected to a stream. Other than that it only has an (undesired) aesthetic effect. Do you have a picture of the hole in question?

No judge would convict.   Do you have a rendering?   Or is it one of the aerator sprayers?   Those can dissipate your pond scum.

let them do it as long as the funding for it doesn't come from the clubs general or capital funds.    If someone wants to raise other $$ for it, let them have it.

To clarify, I meant the existence of the lake not its condition.

Or take it to the extreme. Insist on sculptures of nymphs and water sprites. Maybe with soft music on a repeating loop. Once you start down the fountain road, all sorts of things become possible.

Helpfully,  Bob

Just think Adrian if they invest in a lake they may ask you to come up with one of these two design options

With the added feature of a fountain which only works when the ball fall into the hole.

Or perhaps that is just as ridicules an idea as scaring a course with lake and associated fountain. Oh yes more money can be raised by renting out boats, fishing permits, bathing,  - oh hell let’s just call it a country club and forget the golf.

Silly no, is just as practical as having a lake and fountain on a golf course.

Ours is used to keep the pond scum under control , it does a nice job for that. Now someone wants to put colored lights on it for the night. OH MY
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

Adrian:

In all seriousness, fountains have been defeated at a couple of local clubs by introducing "alger" fish to the lake.  They eat off the algae which sits on the top of the lake and keep the lake looking clean throughout the summer.

Also, a local club used to have a huge geese issue.  They bought 2 swans and established a home for them by the lake.  Geese are gone.

Best of luck.

A fountain is nothing. Just wait for the proposed waterfall to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

My other fave is when they put in trees gates on holes or erect arboratums all over the course:)

Underwater aerators can accomplish water circulation to help defeat algae build up without the horrific artificial look.  Unfortunately, some members think they are "pretty".  We had one member, a very nice man, who proposed fountains every year.  I threatened to install one in his front yard for his return from snowbirding so that he could have his aesthetic pleasure without ruining our golf course.  We have no fountains.
