Did the lost par 3 play over the road?

I think I got it.  I don't know how to post pictures but:

Old Front Nine = 18, non-existent par four, 7, 8, 9, 10, 6, par three in oppisite direction as current 3rd, 1;
Old Back Nine = 2, 4, 5, alps, 13, 14, 15, lost par three near Archie's current 16, 17.

That's gotta be close, but the lost par three on the back nine had to be the 11th hole, not the 17th, correct?

Obviously, the original routing is much more straightforward (two loops of returning nines).  I'm guessing it was altered solely to get a driving range?  What destroys more golf courses, driving ranges or road construction?

Great research guys , impressive!   The missing par three was probably the weakest hole on the course, and was located where our big practice green is today . . Vestiges of the old tee remain at the back of the parking lot, it was about 155 from the tips.

If you look at the 1991 aerials , the 2nd hole was a par three.....we ripped it out.  (lol).   Replaced it with today's 16 th .

What really interests me about the 1956 picture is the "9th hole".  .....must say I'm more than a little embarrassed that I can't figure it out yet, as the hole in my mind was always reversed. Seems like our 1st hole (today) was reversed , as was the 2nd.

Archie,

I probably played GB in 1977 or 78 when the old clubhouse was located at the 1,9,10,18 configuration. Actually, it may have been under construction, but the old clubhouse was obviously located down at that end, which you probably know.

 ??? ::) ???

Joe, we have a decent amount of historical data....but I missed something with the 9th hole as pictured in 1956 .  We also have talked about the time frames for completion of the golf course, which appears to be later than the 1923 that had long been reported.  1925 might be right , but it could be as late as 1927!  Talks with Joe and Mike C have narrowed the debate, but have not totally solved that mystery!

M. Sweeney you'll have to join us soon , we are getting lots of winter golf !  We have lots of stories and pictures of the old clubhouse as you suspected. I never saw it in person, but it looks rough and tumble (perfect) in the old photos . It sat on a hill left of our existing 17 green, was kind of rickety. Definely old school.

George Faziio , with nephew Tom on the crew, did lots of work for Gene Gatti when he first purchased the club.much later Ron Garl built new holes (now 11 & 12 ) and built a range to facilitate the LPGA Shop Rite tournament. Gene Gatti loved trees, and planted them all over the course . We did a lot of tinkering after the 1998 purchase, but lots of Park Jr still shines thru .

I think I might have 9 and 10 wrong Archie.  They could be switched in my routing above, and each running the opposite fashion.

I agree that 10 looks like it should go the other way.  It sure seems like 9 is going in the correct direction though.. ???

That fits!  Number  1 (today ) is # 9.   # 2 was 10 circa 1956 .

 ???  ???  ???

Just need some confirmation on the old aerials .  Could it be that there was no green side bunker on today's 2nd hole.  #10 circa 1956.  That bunker tends to be problematic , and could use some tweaking.  My guess is that George Fazio added it in the redo, but would like some more clarity.  Thanks in advance.

Archie, if you look at my most recent attempt at the routing in 1956 (which I assume is the same as when the course opened), next to my blue dot indicating approximately where I think the 10th tee was located shows what appears to be some bunkers right next to it.  Which is why I originally had this hole running the opposite way as it appears to be a greensite.

Go to HistoricAerials.com and put in Somers Point, NJ and quickly move the map a bit to find your course.  Then under the 'compare' dropdown menu choose 'slide' and choose two different years (like 1956 and 2007) and move that slider back and forth.  Pretty fun stuff.

Archie-When 2 is pinned back left behind the bunker that is an extremely exacting approach. Both times I have played it has been back there. It is a very tough hole(# 1 handicap) and a par must be like gold to your members in match play. It has to be very gratifying to hit some sort of running draw and have it get close.

Hey Joe ready to fix this for me . Been hanging with the older members going over the aerials.   The green on 9 is actually right behind 18 (now 17)

So if you move the ninth green back another 40 yards we've got it spot on !

The bunkers on 10 make more sense now if you pull the tee back on 10 closer to the 9th green.

The bunkers need to be flown off the tee.  Similar to a lot of Ross courses.

Thanks Joe now we have it right !  Number 9  was a par five , which surprised me as the 1st green today fits so well. It was obviously part of the Fazio redo .  George did a nice job!

You have it right , good work .

I've built a new Greate Bay photo album from a visit on Saturday.  This is a nice improvement even if the lighting wasn't ideal.  This course is wonderful for architecture fans with many good Willie Park holes left.
