O.T. Like wow, man!
« on: January 13, 2012, 07:28:56 PM »
I'm sorry, this is probably so off topic it is in another world, just like Matt Every.  I just watched an interview with Every, by Kelly Tillman, and it was a pity and a shame, for PR for the PGA, IMHO.  I can't say with any certainty that he was high, but he has been disciplined in the past for drug abuse.  If you look up slacker in the dictionary, I wouldn't be surprised if you find Every's picture.  This interview shouldn't reflect negatively on anyone on the PGA tour except Every, but at the end of the day, it was a post round player interview, and he ought to know that he does present an image of pro golfers. I have to think that his attempt at transferance of blame for the proverbial, "other guys do bad things" should elicit the cold shoulder of everyone in a PGA lockerroom. I think in some sports locker rooms, a serious ass beating might be adminstered.  Every is a loser plain and simple.   I'm no temperance tea tottler as many here know.  But, I think the PGA admin ought to hand Matt Every a pee cup after every round, and collect some hair samples.  Even Faldo was aghast along with stunned exclamation by Rolfiing.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I would say that marijuana use on the PGA Tour is on par with the NBA.

I personally had more trouble with Kelly saying Roll Tide last night. I can put up with a lot of high golfers on camera before I hear those words again.

I thought Kelly's question was a bit out of line frankly. ???
and yes, he could've handled it better :o

perhaps we all need a bit of whatever he's on to endure some of those preshot routines.
Honestly the crap I watched last week was so blatant, multiple practice swing divots. 2 minute routines, that I think this guy and the PR of the tour is the least of their worries.(I didn't even bother with the last round and still don't know who won)
If ever a locker room ass beating was needed it was last week
absolutely unwatchable

That question was as bad as Jim Gray's question to Pete Rose.

Bad question - his response is irrelevant

He squirmed immediately...... Kelly was out of bounds!

Dick,

Golf is not a team sport, he has no need to protect the locker room.  If the fuddy duddies on the pga tour  suspend him 3 months for something as trivial as being in the same room as someone smoking dope, then he has every right to point out the hysterical over the top judgement of him such as shown in your post.

I wanted to hear about his strange looking putter, not some 3-yr old misdemeanor charge (later dropped) for marijuana possession (I don't think that qualifies as drug "abuse").  Bad PR, by him (as said by Faldo), but he struck me as someone with little to no experience in the media spotlight who was asked a  Jim Gray type question (and follow-up question after he said he didn't want to talk any more about it) that he didn't see coming.  There probably isn't a "green room" prep session for these Golf Channel interviews, so he was obviously unprepared.

Stupid interview by Tilghman, can't talk about the golf as the course is boring, windy, bermuda wall to wall, and flat...

100% agree. For him to be asked about a 'lost' period as though he was some sort of drug addict is highly offensive. He's going to get a lot of heat for saying that far worse happens on tour, but he is certainly correct about that.

He doesn't come across well in the interview...similar to my interactions with him at a tournament a few years ago. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I find it curious that folks are casting criticism at Tilgman.  I couldn't care less about the frivolous doobie rap per se.  Cripes, I was a cop in Mad-town for crying out loud.  I've seen enough casual un-enforcement of MJ law and regulation to not have that issue as the point of my dismay.

It was the wise ass demeanor and unprofessional manner he handled the questions.  Good questions in my view, and I think once Kelley saw just how trashed he appeared, she did what a good reporter and interviewer should do, ferret out what is really going on with this player.

I think we have seen this movie before in regards to an arrogant, wise ass, approaching his/her responsibilities to project professionalism. Other athletes, celebrities, etc., have shot them selves in the foot with a 'too cute by half' mentality.  Any bets how long this guy is going to last?

It told me quite a great deal when cornered about his own behavior and attitude that his go-to response was to try and throw his colleagues under the bus with vague insinuations.  The guy doesn't seem to have any class, in my view.

I'll stick with my notion that based on his appearance and demeanor, they ought to test this guy frequently and rigorously.  I also would be very observant of such a dude if I were in his playing group given his 'don't give a crap attitude'.

From my perspective, people can satirize FIGJAM, fluffy McChokelstein, and perhaps even Mrs Doubtfire with a little humor and valid criticism.  But Every seems to be about to launch himself into a whole other personality to 'love to dislike'.  I hope he learns from the instant criticism, but history of such personality meltdowns don't bode well, it seems to me.

Dick, you characterized him in your first post as a drug abuser.

As for Kelly T, I stand by my comment that bringing up a 3-yr old minor citation for something that (probably not going out on a limb) a sizable percentage of his age group has done (smoke pot or be in the presence of those smoking pot in a group setting...unluckily for them it was in a place with zero tolerance for it) was going for the Jim Gray effect.  I wanted to hear about his strange putter, and how he felt today shooting a 64 in a PGA Tour event, not hearing what life lessons he learned because some small town cop arrested him and some friends in a motel room three years ago (charges subsequently dropped).

Yeah he reacted poorly, and Bridgestone is probably thinking about yanking their logos off him, and I'm not going to point him out to my boys as someone to emulate, but he doesn't have a history like Michael Vick or even Todd Marinovich.

The charge was dismissed!

The man had no idea he was going to be asked this question.

A good question would have been "Great round - what do you attribute your great play too?"

Did Kelly ask Tiger if Elin beat him with a 5 iron.

Cmon.....give the guy a break!

Geez.  I just watched the interview on YouTube.  What an absurd thread and an absurd response in the OP.

First, an astonishingly stupid and borderline offensive question for Tilghman to ask.  Second, he didn't seem any more out of it than 90% of young modern pros when interviewed.  I saw nothing at all to suggest he was stoned.  What was he supposed to say  He was arrested and the charge dismissed.  Then, having got through Q-school and leading in a tour event, he gets asked about it.  What's he supposed to say?  He doesn't seem very bright, perhaps, but how much of that was down to the obvious and entirely inderstandable extreme discomfort he obviously felt.  A disgraceful line of questioning and, as above, ab absurd response here.

I love this guy!  I'll take him all day long over any dozen mechanized clowns who wear their tour bible study group on their sleeve like a Rolex endorsement.  Now I have a reason to actually watch this thing. The tour is starved for characters, and as soon as anyone acts the least bit politically incorrect we skewer 'em.  No wonder most tour events are more nap inducing than a fist full of Ambien.  Best quote: "It's just golf".  Nananananananananananana.........

Tilghman was way out of line with the question first of all. Second I don`t know how anyone can make the assumption that the kid is high. He looked uncomfortable and out of his element. I don`t think he is going to get much love for his comment about worse things going on but that was a knee jerk reaction to getting blind sided. To make the comment that he needs an ass beating is crazy talk. I hope he wins the tournament.

I saw a Twitter link to the interview last night  that was described as "awkward/weird interview by Tilghman" and watched it without knowing the history on Matt Every, thinking that it was simply another KT crash-and-burn debacle like the Tiger "lynching" incident.

So I am watching the first part of the interview and seeing him looking a bit spaced-out, and noticing his odd breathing pattern, and immediately thought to myself, this guy is stoned.

Once the questions about his past started popping up, it all made sense. Was she out of line in asking? Perhaps. But if a player like Daly who has had a well-known history of drinking problems came on and sat across from her reeking of whiskey, would she have been out of line asking about that? Perhaps this is a similar situation - she smelled or sensed it and went there. I don't know, obviously, and I say that as a person who cannot stand KT's work on Golf Channel. I wish they would cut her loose. But she may have been justified in bringing it up.

As for Every, he clearly thinks it is OK to get high immediately after a round and it would seem that he has learned nothing from his previous close brush with trouble. Unfortunate, but not surprising given his apparent immaturity.
