A quick intro…so after lurking for a few years, thanks to Ran, I am coming to the other side as a member. Based on the subject matter experts on the site, it is bit overwhelming, but at a minimum it should be a learning experience and a hopefully a great way to meet those passionate about GCA.
I just turned 44, but I have been involved in golf for almost 35 years. Thankfully, I have a highly tolerant wife that doesn’t play and a couple of kids, 17 and 10. Not sure if the yips or the kids have had the bigger impact on my handicap increase. Wouldn’t trade them for anything, but it would be nice to be able to make some more 3 footers and break par every once in awhile.
I grew up in Illinois and played competitively in high school and walked on in college, primarily for the free golf. Received my BS from Bradley University and my MBA from UW-Madison. I have worked for John Deere for over 21 years in product development. This has fostered a kinship with the land, especially the green variety.
Having finally acknowledged that my competitive days are over, while somewhat depressing, it has made me more aware of the total golf experience including the architectural aspect. So again, I am a novice to this group based on my knowledge and amount of great courses played, so be gentle.
I currently live in Raleigh and am a member at Raleigh CC. In my mind, a great Donald Ross course and where I play most of my golf. Probably a toss-up between Ross and C+C for my favorite architects.
Golf in 2011 included some decent highlights…not necessarily in this order.
• Sand Hills (best overall design)
• Dormie Club (probably missed some subtleties, the one I would like to play again)
• Dismal River (tons of fun, thanks CJ)
• Prairie Dunes (great test, would have liked more if I spent less time in the gunch)
• Old North State
• TPC Deere Run
• Diamante (some great holes, the wind embarrassed me)
• May River (best conditioned, greens were incredible)
• Sedgefield
• Musgrove Mill
For 2012, the to-play list is longer than the budget and time will allow, but the plan includes a Bandon Trip and hopefully visits to Chechessee, Secession, Ocean Forest, Ballyneal, Colorado Golf Club, Cherry Hills, Wild Horse, and Prairie Club. And more if the opportunity presents itself.
For those that want to enjoy Ross’ work at Raleigh, let me know.
Again, thanks for allowing me to contribute; it looks like I better get the needle sharpened.
Happy New Year!!
